France to ban radar warning too

Just a heads-up......

As is the case already in Germany and Switzerland, France now too wants to make having POI's with rader locations in your GPS an offense, with a possible penalty of up to approx US $ 2000.

The measure is said to be introduced just before the summer holidays.... probably so as to get as many unwary 'offenders' as possible.

These (Cyclops) POI's come STANDARD in the Garmin and most other brands, so you'll need to delete the files eventually if you're afraid of being caught.

What are the "search and seizure" rights in France?

In the US they cannot look into your stuff without probable cause. The only way they might get that is if you never received a speeding ticket?

Not a problem in France.

Having said that, there ARE two successful cases of people contesting the law on the 'points of interest' in their GS's, one in Germany and one in Switzerland. Of course you need to be rich, old or foolhardy to start such a case against the government.

France ees sooo stupeeed. In effect they are saying we would rather you speed thru the radar traps so we can catch you, rather than driving at le limite de vitesse. :dopeslap:

Every time I think America has jumped the shark, Europe lowers the bar and makes what we do seem perfectly reasonable.

OK, so don't mark them as "RADAR ZONES" on your POI list; mark them as "donut shops" or "bacon zones" or something.

It's all about plausible deniability.

Good idea. But they really can't enforce this law anyway. What they are trying to do is force Garmin & the others to stop putting the trap locations in the GPS units sold in France. And in the Citynav upgrades, etc. And it will probably work. So then, all zee frenchees weel order them from....Belgium!

How often do you have to update the POI file? Or don't y'all move your speed traps around on a daily basis?

Europe has a large number of fixed automatic radar sites. You speed past them, they take a picture of the rear of the vehicle and the registered owner gets a ticket in the post. The law requires you to name the driver of the vehicle or just take the penalty yourself.

In addition to this, there are even more 'mobile' sites, where LEOs have Lidar or Radar to measure your speed and issue tickets - these tend to be in the dame locations (in the UK the location has to meet specific rules) and so the locations can be given POIs. I update mine monthly from a subscription database, updated by its members with free subscription if you are the first to report a verified site. The POI tells you if it is a fixed site, a mobile site or a 'provisional' mobile site.

They've started instituting those little money-makers in the US as well. They're blanketing the northern Virginia and DC area with the little cash-generators.

I got nailed in Washington DC for going 53 in a 45 in my mini-van. Of course the 45 MPH is in a section of highway w/2 merging sections, so if you need to move around someone, or get out of the way, or merge quickly, you're going to get a ticket.
