1300GT K-bike "up in smoke" on the Zoncolan!

Following cycle races is very, very hard, especially on mountain roads such as these. It's as proving on the rider as on the bike.

They used old K bikes to follow races and switched over to these specially modified K1300GT's only when the old bikes had absolutely no life left in them. This was not a case of penny-pinching but because they reckoned the newer Wedge bikes would be more prone to overheating and blowing their cooling systems, just like here. Not a design fault: Euro-3 bikes run very hot due to very lean fuel admixture and plodding around all day at 10-20 mph doesn't help.

And so it begins. Being water cooled I would think that would not happen, it's got a fan, right? And a temperture gauge?

I used my K13GT to pace a local ironman - style race. It did fine until I made the mistake of shutting it off at one of the transition points. Of course, the hot-start problem occurred so I used my Harley VRod to finish the race. Pretty neat getting to drive on bike trails normally off-limits to motorized vehicles. Staying ahead of the bicycles on the downhills caused a few pucker moments.

Don't think I'm not sitting here watching!!! I am sitting on my hands!!!! Not gonna do it as I am too busy...........................................................................................................................awaiting BMWNA to finish up with my F800GS that has been in the shop since APRIL 8TH with no resolve!!!!!! I have to admit that for some reason, my 1200RT handled heat better than any other bike I've owned. My gsxr 750 and C14 do not do well with prolonged idling and slow speeds in hot weather despite being water cooled.

The K1600 cooling system is based on the K1300s. In fact, according to Heinz Hege it has the K1300 radiator. He is on the K1600 development team. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

I felt my RT always handled heat very well, too. If you had any sort of breeze, or if you were moving just a bit, the temp gauge would never hit the red zone.

Of course, if it had to traverse the course this K1300 is on I would probably discover just how hot a bike can get!

April 2 and still waiting for someone to figure out how to fix my 2010 RT. I'm on the second dealership now. I just learned today it will be at least into next week.
