How to "un-lower" an R1200RT??

I just bought a 2007 R1200RT that had been factory lowered.

I'm 6' tall so don't need a lowered RT.

Does anyone know what "lowering" the bike involved (different shocks?) and wondering how big a job it would be to put it back to standard height.

Or am I better off (cheaper) to sell this to a vertically challenged rider and get another standard height one - yuk!

Thanks for any advice.

Been told that factory lowering is done via the shock length (not shock travel) so installing regular shocks should do the trick. However, your "lowered" side and center stand will be further off the ground resulting in the bike leaning way over on the side stand and probably not getting the rear wheel off the ground on the center stand.

Morning Rainor

What’s your complaint now, riding or when stopped?

If it is riding position while moving then maybe just a standard seat and seat hardware to get your butt a bit higher. Your comfort while riding has to do with the position of the “seat”, (to) “foot pegs”, (to) “handlebars” (to) each other.

The height of the bike only matters when stopped and your feet are on the ground. The height can also effect dragging things like foot pegs when leaned way over.

The big disadvantage to a lowered bike is decreased suspension travel, possibly dragging under-things in large lean angle situations, & probably preventing you from adding lowered foot pegs in the future. (I can drag the foot pegs on a standard height bike now so I can imagine how much they would touch down on a lowered bike with lowered foot pegs)

Yes, much better off to sell it and buy a standard height 1200RT.

The lowered version (as somone else stated) has short shocks/springs, short side and ctr. stands and the one position low seat with very thin foam on it. You would probably be looking in the area of $2000+ to buy new aftermarket shocks, side and ctr. stand seat etc.

Good Luck with your decision

Sell it, start over?

Or, see if anyone is interested in your lowering components and when you sell them then rebuild yours.

Personally I would just sell the lowered one then look for a new ride.

There's a few people on the list with non-factory lowered RT's that have never changed their center stand and side stand. I'd buy a set of standard length Ohlins or Wilbers and find someone who wants to swap their stndard height center and side stand for yours.

This was my first post on this forum and man am I impressed with the feedback from everyone!!

To dirtrider: My main complaint right now is ground clearance on cornering. I ride with wife on the back and I'm grinding footpegs a lot (even w/out wife). Note that I have the lowered footpegs as well which is making the problem worse. Being 6' I do appreciate the lowered pegs and would hate to go to a standard peg. It has a Rich's Seat which is lower than stock. Overall I like the riding position and seat comfort.

It just happens that I picked up a rear ESA shock from a wrecked 2006 R1200RT the other day. I presume it's a standard height but will check it out. If I can pick up a front ESA shock and swap out both lowered shocks that would seem to be the biggest issue. How hard is it to change shocks? I would still need center & side stand - anyone willing to sell/swap any or all of these parts??

To hopz: Are you serious about a trade? Email me details of your 2005 - banjorw@yahoo.ca Thx

Anyway, thanks for all the input.

It almost assuredly has a "low seat" so why not just buy a comfy "tall seat" and just enjoy your ride?

Clearance when cornering.
