Oilpan dirty, could be clutch fluid?

Smoky

Recommended Posts

I went to do an oil change today, and my oilpan was a mess. I scraped and brushed, used some brake-clean, and got it much cleaner. (Wifes toothbrush is never going to be the same!)

It's wet where I think the clutch mechanism is. I checked the clutch fluid, and it appears to be at the top, just under the rubber cover.

Anybody else have this issue? Anywhere else I should look?

Difficult to tell much from the pictures & description.

That would be an awful lot of fluid from the clutch system so should show low clutch fluid if that was what was leaking.

The 05 RT’s are kind of known for both rear main seal leaks and the rear balancer shaft seal leaking.

If it were my bike I would clean it up until no more oil showing then switch to a conventional motor oil (non synthetic) then ride it a while to see what if any new leaks show up.

That is most definitely some sort of seepage/leak. I'd hit it with degreaser, let it soak, clean it really good, and then keep an eye out for where the wet spot starts creeping from.

Hard to get up above where I cleaned. I'm thinking of riding to the car-wash, and hitting it with hi-pressure soapy water.

Then maybe I can see where it's coming from.

If the rear main seal is leaking, would I experience a slipping clutch? I'm having no such troubles.

Knocking on wood.

Not necessarily so, you will only have a slipping clutch IF the oil is getting on the clutch plate. The oil can run down the back of the block and not get on the clutch parts or can only leak after shutdown.

If you really can’t locate the oil leak maybe visit you local auto parts store and get a small bottle of oil dye. You pour that in the oil then use a black light to track the die stains.
