nealopp
Hi all, I just got word from one of my regular customers that Santa Cruz BMW is shutting down as of today. He went in and they had apparently just gotten word from BMWNA. Has anyone heard this that can confirm? I'm sad to lose my neighborhood dealer, if that's the case. -Neal Link to comment
FLrider
Why would BMWNA do this to a dealer? Link to comment
nealopp
Who knows? My guess would be a lack of sales to support their inventory, maybe outstanding debt. But that's just me shooting in the dark. I'm more just looking for confirmation that they're done. Nothing on the website yet, and they're normally closed Sun-Mon, so I guess we won't know until Tuesday, unless someone else can confirm. Been stuck at work all day... Link to comment
nealopp
Looks like it's true, according to the South Bay Riders Forum: http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109432 Link to comment
upflying
Wonder if CHP's decision to buy the KZ14 had anything to do with it? As I recall, BMW of Santa Cruz was in on the state bid process to sell the 1200RT-P's. Link to comment
Shaman97
FYI: BMWSC's FB: "Santa Cruz closed its doors at 6 PM Saturday May 15 due to economic conditions" Sad to hear when this happens. Link to comment
Codeman
Santa Cruz helped me out once on a trip down from Oregon. They even set up the sale as an internet sale so I didn't have to pay sales tax. Sorry to see them go. Didn't they have the Wunderlich distribution at one time? Link to comment
upflying
That's two dealers (maybe more) gone in the greater SF Bay Area. So what's the trend here? Showroom retail sales have succumed to internet sales? Recession? High prices of retail parts. $135/hr labor rate for service? Unfriendly business taxes in Ca? High taxes in general? More owners are DIY and seeking alternative and cheaper sources of parts? Gas prices? With the internet, does anyone need to go to a dealer anymore? Link to comment

Hey Bob: The internet makes the pool of competition that much bigger, just as globalization does to businesses at home. Dealers (and other businesses) have to find a way to stay competitive or go out of business. $135/hr for labor is robbery. If that is what they charged, no wonder. Link to comment
longjohn
That's two dealers (maybe more) gone in the greater SF Bay Area. The Honda dealer in Fairfield also shut their doors after 42 years, according to a friend who sold bikes there. He subsequently picked up a job selling Ducatis, Triumphs and KTMs in Concord. I was so happy for him. I think the high unemployment numbers here in CA is the biggest problem. I know 2 down here in SoCal who have been out of work for more than a year, one worked for Yahoo and the other is/was a chemistry teacher. It's just so sad. Link to comment
upflying
I think $75 an hour is insane. These are 2009 average rates. https://www.mechaniconduty.com/MapGraphic_email.pdf Link to comment

Sorry to see them go. Didn't they have the Wunderlich distribution at one time? The prior and long time owner sold the SC dealership to take on the Wunderlich distribution for the US,BMWSC was still a major outlet for Wunderlich. For the last several years BMWSC has been part of a multi brand dealership. JR356 Link to comment
