Replaced battery. Dropped MPG. Fixes?

Polo

Recommended Posts

Hi, I replaced my battery maybe 2K ago.

Part of the protocol was to turn the key on, then rotate the throttle fully open a couple of times to re-learn settings. This was recommended with the advance off, which it wasn't - my mistake.

Since then I have noticed poor gas mileage; I'm getting about 36 MPG. Today, I have some time on my hands, and will either take the plastic off and remove one of the terminals, reafix and do the above procedure w/o the advance closed, or...

I will do whatever someone recommends to accomplish the same effect sans tupperware removal.

Bike has 29.7K. Did valves, all filters TBB's and TB synch at 24K, did not do spark plugs, they were light tan and clean, so I figured they'd hold until 36K.

TIA!

Just remove the #5 fuse in from the L/H side for about 30 seconds then reinstall and do the TPS relearn (same as disconnecting the battery)

Thanks DR.

Do you concur that the drop in MPG may be a result of having relearned with the advance open?

Polo,

What kind of mileage were you getting before the battery swap?

About 42.

Same roads, conditions, riding style, etc.

Got new BT-023's about 1K ago, but seems even smoother rolling in that respect.

Not really but it’s cheap to try and should be done anyway.

They will usually re-learn the low (idle) TPS on their own while riding but the WOT is a little more difficult for it to re-learn as you have to go to WOT often enough for it see that at the correct time.

Fuel mileage is strange thing to figure especially in the spring at gasoline change-over from winter fuel to summer fuel. That goes even more so if you live in an area that specifies an emission regulated summer fuel type.

If nothing else found maybe check your 02 sensor as that has a big effect on level road moderate throttle steady cruising fuel economy.

No chance you used a spray cleaner to clean your BBS screw passages recently and it wasn’t an o2 sensor safe cleaner?

I used Gumout. Don't know if it's O2 safe or not. I'm a 1-size-fits-all kind of guy in the garage; I use Castrol oil, Ac-Delco oil filters and Autolite/Champion sparkplugs. Oh the horror!.

I poured a whole can of SeaFoam in the gas tank before the 24K event.

I'll go ride and report.
