Syro
Dear friends , i am not sure if it is just me getting older or my '97 RT breaking down in zillion pieces.I've managed to solve the problem with what i described in a previous post of mine as "weird feeling on steering wheel when entering tarmac holes" by uncovering the steering head bearing and tightening it a bit.I gave it just a minor twist. It must have been the result of the long urban commuting (Greek tarmac must be held as BMW test area for GS series!!!). Anyway , i have started again to having an idling issue when the engine is very warm.Temperature the last days has gone up here (20-22 Celsius) and now the Odyssey battery (PC680) is running as it should but when the temperature rises 5-6 bars on the FID the idling while standing is not steady as it should. I contacted my mechanic and he asked me if i had stopped at another gas station and had low quality fuel problems. A few months ago i experienced the same problem and the problem solved by changing the right spark plug wire with a used one , cause the original one seemed to fail when the engine temperature rised. Qs 1.Are our RTs so touchy as far as low quality fuel is concerned? 2.Should i replace both spark plug wires with new ones? 3.what should i check this time? Tx in advance to ya all Link to comment
dirtrider
Afternoon FCS 1.Are our RTs so touchy as far as low quality fuel is concerned?-----No, not so much to low quality fuel but touchy to fuel with water or lots of alcohol in it. For sure try a tank or two of new gasoline before getting real involved with other things. Might just solve your idle problem, especially if you have a load of high vapor pressure winter fuel in it now. 2.Should i replace both spark plug wires with new ones?---- Probably not a bad idea but might not solve your idle issues. Usually a bad spark plug or plug wire shows up under high engine load first not at idle. 3.what should i check this time?---- Try new gasoline first, then either remove the CCP or disconnect the 02 sensor to see if that helps the hot curb idle. Otherwise you will probably need to just work your way through the fuel & ignition systems & clear all parts of all the systems of being the cause. Might even check for tight throttle cables that hold a throttle plate open a bit when hot. Link to comment
Syro
Goodafternoon DR. Please be so kind to elaborate on "remove the CCP or disconnect the 02 sensor " and "you will probably need to just work your way through the fuel & ignition systems & clear all parts of all the systems of being the cause" .I am not that good at putting the parts apart , so to start with , emmm what is the CCP? and what parts are you refering taking apart and cleaning? (i sure do know the 02 sensor!!!) Tx in advance. Link to comment
Syro
Is it good to add into the fuel a carb cleaner fluid or this will only make the problem even worse as it does increase the alcohol in the fuel? Link to comment
AndyS
what is the CCP? CCP is the Cat Code Plug. on the attached picture (item 1) you will see it as the Motronics Ecoding Plug. Link to comment
