markgoodrich Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I've been sort of noticing that my dual Bosch horns (the OEM horns pre-2006) sound a somewhat sour note lately. I've got all sorts of tupperware an assorted other dashbooard/windshield bits and pieces off the bike to replace my double-secret remote mute button for my under-the-tupperware radar detector, so I decided to check the horns the high tone horn sounds anemic, to put it politely, sort of a horny laryngitis effect. I assume it can't be fixed, but thought before I go get a new one I'd ask here. My guess is water got up inside it during the recent Arkansas Death Ride.
dirtrider Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Afternoon Mark Yes, probably water intrusion. Might not have killed it if the water hasn’t been in there for a long time. Maybe try removing the horn then twisting it around to see if any water comes out. If you are sure no water remains inside it try a shot of WD-40 in the hooter end then hook it to a battery to see if it regains it’s old honk.
NewBlue Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If you can't find anything obvious, water, etc. look at the back of the horn and see if it has an adjusting screw. A phillips screw with a jam nut, some are part of the mounting bracket (jam nut with a slotted adjuster) anyway look to see if it has one. If it does loosen the jam nut and give the screw a twist, in and out, while holding the horn on. Disconnect the other one while doing this, save your ears. Just a thought

I gave it a drink of Power Blaster (like WD40, wiped it out, and hooked it up. My garage is down under the kitchen. I hit the horns and both wiener dogs went into a paroxysm of frenzied barking and running around the house. I think one of them may have had a stroke. THANKS for the suggestion!!! It's still a wee bit whiny, but good enough to scare the lady in the SUV into dropping her iPhone and driving.
bobbybob Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 When mine did this, I used compressed air and a nozzle and blew out the horn. A large dead hornet came out along with a few other varmints, and it worked great afterwards. Spraying it with WD etc will probably help un-stick whatever else is in there. I then used super glue to glue a strip of nylon screening material over the opening. Keeps the bugs out.
markgoodrich Posted May 10, 2011 Author Posted May 10, 2011 Update: as mentioned, the WD trick worked pretty well yesterday. Today the horn sounds like it did when new. Thanks again, dirtrider.
