Radar Detector Covers?

I'm pondering purchasing a radar detector, but with the exception of the TPX, all of the options are vulnerable to weather. I've seen the "moto-radar cover" online ($65), but am interested in any other options, or anyone's experience or advice. I'm all ears!

For the Valentine One, I've used the V1 mount from BMR Products for several years. It's not waterproof, but a plastic baggy works fine to keep it dry. The N/Line Products box looks interesting too (http://www.brydenscot.com/?p=21), and I may give it a try one of these days.

Someone may step up and say this is a stupid idea, but I have mine mounted under the fairing, above the right headlight. I bought a cheap ebay "mute button" extension wire which is mounted near my left thumb. It seems to alert as soon as my friends' "open" mounted units. I have an Escort refurb unit, turned off all the laser alert stuff, and the X band, and all the blinky lights. It's wired into my Autocom...required a mono-to-stereo adapter plug from Radio Shack.

Mounting hardware is very complex: a couple of zip ties and a piece of foam. I'd show photos, but that would mean I'd have to take everything apart.

My cop friends tell me that you have zero chance of getting a warning if they see a radar detector. They also tell me the laser alert function is informing me I just got tagged.

Hmmm.. sorry you had trouble. For me, Legal Speeding covers do work well. This one is in use since late 2007 or early 2008, protecting an Escort detector from rain.

I attached the cover, using 3M Dual-Lock strips, to a home-made aluminum U-bracket, surrounding the fog light.

I'm sure they do work well. I wouldn't actually know since they were unable to provide me with the cover they advertised.

The issue I had was the *way* they did business, if you read my post.

These days I have my radar detector behind the windscreen. When I rains I put one of the plastic stretchy bowl covers over it. Not great for a downpour, but works fine for a light rain....

Both the polycarbonate radar box and the N/Line aluminum box look good and give some measure of security. What happens though when the detector goes off and you want to hit "mute"? It appears that once in the box, it's out of reach. Am I missing something?

With a V1, you will need the additional audio box to wire into your intercom/whatever....The audio box has vol/mute control on it that supersedes the controls on the V1 when plugged in.....With Passport..........well......

Here you go, Heck, for the Escort. Mine works fine, I mounted the button near my left thumb on the handlebar.

That is interesting Mark....might snag one of them if I put an Escort on Jessica's Trike....

Tnx..

BTW I didn't intend a dig on the Escort, I have 3 of them...just didn't have any need for a remote mute as they are all in vehicles within reach and without any external box on em.

Wish I would have seen the aluminum enclosure referenced above before I picked up the poly box from Legal Speeding...looks a lot better and less expensive too. I was using the vacuum formed plastic cover that LS sold for the V1...I guess they discontinued it. Top came off at some point, so I needed a new top..ended up changing the whole configuration... Ah well....

Tnx again.

On my 06RT I used the legal speeding box and a Radar Screamer

The 108 dB piezo beeper easily fits out of sight where the radio speaker would be and the low/high/off toggle switch can be attached to an existing screw on the right hand switch gear. (you'll have to get a longer screw)

This way you won't have to worry about not hearing or seeing your radar when it goes off. Can be a bit startling when it goes off on a quiet night. The only problem was that on my escort 8500 the volume control on the Escort itself would dial down during rides but a piece of electrical tape fixed that.

Legal speeding no longer makes one for the 8500...

Otay, my suggestion is unless you are going stealth with under tupperware installation you don't need a box. Use some 3m dual lock and mount it to your master cylinder cover. Riding in Va, or going into the store, or if it starts raining, pull it off and tank bag it. Are you really riding at "arrest me" speed in the rain, or do you turn it down a notch ?

What Cod said. I have a clear plastic cover for my V1, but I've never used it. When it rains, I put the V1 in a pocket or a saddle bag and ride no faster than I feel safe riding, which is usually within LEO tolerance. Never been stopped riding a bike in the rain, and don't think I need to worry about radar but that may be because I am not all that fast in the rain.
