Small Phillips screwdrivers

Hermes

Recommended Posts

Ok, so my Canon AV1 of at least 25 years of stolid service changed ownership to my son, the big Mounty, and within a half day, give or take, he managed to jam up the film advanve lever.. it's stuck!

I can take the camera apart, to a point, but when it comes to the real tight Phillips screws, the P. screwdrivers I have, are way to pointed, e.g. they don't bottom in the screwhead but just spin in mid-air.

So my question is, and you knew there was one coming, where (Website or catalog would be handy) do I get a Phillips Screwdriver small enough and flat enough (almost like a flathead's 90 degrees),to allow insertion into the screwhead and to provide the proper fit to loosen/tighten the little screws.

Thanks in advance

Have you checked the drug store? Look for those little kits that are used for adjusting your eye glasses.

might need to try getting a cheap set of screwdrivers at Mall optician's office and just grinding down the point a little.

My understanding is that the Japanese cross head (like Phillips) screws are slightly different in design and although US Phillips generally fit, you'd be better off getting the correct JIS version. Many places sell them if you Google Japanese screwdrivers.

By the way, what's "film"??

It's like digital paper, but it's sort of transparent while it's still in the camera.

Thanks all for your comments. I believe the Japanese Phillips is the solution as I have ruined 3 flat srewdrivers so far.

Btw, for those young bucks unaware of a previous technology and this generation's affection for it, a film is what you inserted into the back of a camera, all 35 mm of it. You then went into a dark room and mixed up potions while doused in erotic red light and bathed some paper in same potion until a picture emerged on the paper.

Pure magic then, and worth the lenghty and pricy process!

Thanks all

Wiha Tools is a great source for that kind of stuff:

I cannot recommend strongly enough against going to the Wiha website. You'll think you are just going to buy one little Phillips screwdriver, but every time a new page comes up you'll say "I need one of those, too", or "Wow! I didn't know they made that! I need one of those, too!" or "I don't need that, but it's cool, so I'll get one of those, too" and pretty soon you'll have a $150 order. Wiha is tool porn.

Those little screws are not Phillips. Phillips come to a point. Those are called Reed & Prince.

Now, where the hell did I pick up that particular piece of useless info?

Sears makes a great set of jewelers screwdrivers.

That explains everything, all the suggested websites I was given, depicted the regular pointed Phillips.

I will investigate the Reed & Prince.

Thanks for that info and keep up the good work.

Oh Oh..... I was almost drawn into leaving the home page @ Whia. It's a good thing I am not so tired to be drawn into the force of the tool mania! Oh it hurts not to go back!

To disassemble my Panasonic Lumix digital camera for sensor cleaning, I found a 'number zero' Phillips screwdriver at the local hardware store - it did the job without damaging the screw heads.
