VinnyR11
Sometimes small changes can have huge impacts. Check out the article HERE about a possible breakthrough technology that could allow blow molding metals at low cost. There's also a short slightly geekier explanation HERE . Understanding that this technology is still in the early stages and may never come to widespread fruition, if it can be applied to manufacture it could have an enormous impact on the places you'll find metals and the shapes metal will take. If it works as mentioned, we could use metals to take on virtually any shape at reasonable manufacturing costs. That's a pretty big deal IMO. Link to comment
AviP
I think it will have applications for sure, especially for it's strength over plastic and where weight is not an issue. Link to comment
Danny caddyshack Noonan
Amorphous metals are pretty cool but, difficult to make. The tricks involve very fast cooling making very thin sheets the easiest method. Seems like MIT might have come up with a different technique. Link to comment
lawnchairboy
seems like we are on the verge of a couple of exciting manufacturing breakthroughs in molded/sculpted products... http://www.economist.com/node/18114327?Story_ID=18114327 Link to comment
