Hi Everyone,

Just want to let you know we have a spring savings event on light saver headlight guards for the R1200RT model. These guards are constructed of a 30 mil (~1/16") thick, double-polished, optical quality, poly-vinyl film. This film is applied to the surface of your stock headlight to protect the lens from damage due to rocks, bugs, and other flying debris. We are also offering specials on Scorpion jackets and pants, please call for details.

Ride Safe,

Craig Dougan

Hi Craig and welcome.

We here at BMWST.com like to keep the forum free of commercial posts as far asa possible.

As per the user agreement you signed on joining, rule 10 states:

If you own or are part of a motorcycle related, commercial enterprise you may make a one time announcement to the board. After that you may put a link in your signature line as your only reference to your business.

We also allow you to give specific answers to specific questions on your products or services.

We will therefore take this post as your one-time announcement and hope that you can find time to become a regular participant in our other discussions.

Once again, welcome to the site,

Andy

How about a Vendor section? Just a thought. That way everyone knows they are dealing with a vendor but it allows them to post specials and such. Just a thought.

How about a Vendor section...

I vote NO! on that. If you want a good vendor selection try Google...

Well then I vote YES  Now it's a tie. LOL!

one satisfied customer here. welcome to the board.

Twisted Throttle really is a good and responsive vendor, but they're one of a number of top-notch online resources. I'm amazed at the high level of service you get from these folks. I would put Twisted Throttle in the same league as Beemer Boneyard, Adventure Designs, Cycle Nutz, and Max BMW, just to name a few I've dealt with more than once or twice.

I will say this: Twisted Throttle has the coolest sticker for your hard case.

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the Board!

Have always appreciated my dealings with the folks @ Twisted Throttle.

Enjoyed any New York System "weenies" lately? :) Instant heartburn but you can't get them in Texas!

I think its a great idea. As for the one that said no, if you dont want to see it then dont click on it. Its a great way for vendors to offer specaials to forum member as well as to get feedback from those that have had dealings with them.

Perhaps because vendors already have websites.

The one time opportunity has worked for years and doesn't seem to have inconvenienced either vendor or customer.

I think a vendor section for members would be a good idea! Many other forums do this and charge a small yearly fee to help cover costs ($10??). Why not?? I am sure that a screening process would be necessary to make sure that the vendor is legit and customer friendly......

Lots of things "work" but some could work even better. Not saying to advertise for vendors to set up a website at BMWST. Just move all existing (recent) and new vendor postings to the "Vendor Section". Limit the size of the postings. It could be done, no skin off anyone's back. We have admin's watching for them already and notifying them of their "rights". Go one step further.

The KLR.net website has a nice vendor section. It seems to be a nice way to provide a service to the forum members while keeping the advertising out of the dialog threads. I believe the vendors do pay for this service, but I have no idea how much.

This sounds like the kind of idea that it is easy for most of us to say yes to because it doesn't involve any work on our part. I'd be concerned though that it might involve a lot more work for our administrators who I think do a great job, especially given their compensation package. (Now the private jet & fine dining that the UN organizers get is a whole different story. :D )

Don't see how it could be any more time consuming than what they do now. Try it, and if some unexpected can of worms gets opened....just shut it back real quick before they get out! :)

Be nice to see the occasional time-limited, discount, on-line purchase coupon from vendors for BMWSportTouring forum members only. Benefits all around, I think. Revenue potential for the forum host?

A vendor section sounds good to me, as long as it's not too much extra work for the fine folks who provide us this wonderful site. Those who do not want it always have the option not to look at it.

This is not to open a discussion. It is to explain what the position of the management of this board has been on this topic. You may disagree, which is fine. If you do, bring it to us privately, not publicly.

This is a community of members who share and exchange information. As such, it does not have everything. No politics. No Group Buys. No commercialism (which of course means. . .) No Vendors.

Anyone who has a product to sell is entitled to a single product announcement, whether it's a small company like mine, or a larger company such as that which initiated this thread. You are welcome to that one-time thread. Beyond that, those with a commercial angle are only allowed a link in their sig line, and to answer questions that members ask about products, making sure not to turn it into a marketing exercise or to mention price. Of course, contributing to other non-commercial topics and discussions carries no such limitation.

As such, and given the plethora of sites we all know about, as well as those researchable through avenues such as Google, we understand that whatever you want to know that ISN'T available here, is available elsewhere with but a few clicks. If so, then why not also have it here?

Because it creates more work. LOTS more work. We already have a half dozen active moderators who are purely volunteers, and who spend hours and hours each week checking the board and keeping it running smoothly, removing spammers, banning asshats, making sure Classified ads meet requirements and are approved (then removed when sold), approving new members, etc. etc. etc. All the while, we're giving up time that we'd rather spend with our families, or working on our bikes, or maybe just reading a book. Our members only see the end product. And we understand that without meaning any disrespect, it's often easy for you to simply assume that this place "just happens."

There's a simplicity to the way things function here. Maybe some would call it an elegance (although I think that's a bit high-falootin'). But nevertheless a general tranquility that we've found better serves the sharing of information than any other format. Not that any other is worse or better. But this one is the way we like it. And given that anything you want to know is available here, or when it's available elsewhere eventually migrates here, there really is no need for it.

My knee jerk reaction was definitely no. Then I read the other postings and can really see some Good points on both sides. Perhaps, as suggested, a vendors special section a la RDOT?

I don't have to view it or admin it or design it. Worthy of consideration at least.

I am against increasing the load on the moderators for the sake of a few less key strokes. When I think of it I send some money in to support the corporate jet. I'm all for helping maintain it and the people who make it happen.

I don't want to see anything, let alone advertising/marketing, alter what we have here. There is no need for it, IMHO.

For the most part, I agree with FB's thinking.

Over the years I have seen some group buys go very very ugly, and often they tend to be a lot of work for someone, especially relative to the generally small discounts involved. A few years ago I watched one on a car board where the members bought some expensive exhaust systems from overseas, saving a ton on shipping. Problem was, none of the exhaust systems would fit on the cars, and arrangements had to be made to ship the POS's back to the UK. Who wants that hassle? It was unpleasant to watch, and it went on for about a year.

As for the vendor section, it works pretty well over on one of the S1000RR boards. The vendors get vetted to some degree, and each has it's own forum to announce various new products and discounts, and then you deal direct with the vendor, not with the board or board members. To its credit, the board has banned some vendors who have been d*ckheads - the vendors either failed to deliver as promised, or more curiously, chose to insult potential customers on matters unrelated to commerce.
