Under the motor in a recess. You will need a wrench to remove it. If you take your new filter along to an auto supply shop you will be able to find one that fits, or you can buy one for more money from your dealer.

It's recessed in a well on the bottom of the engine, left-hand side. You usually need a special wrench to remove it. BMW filters have a different knurling pattern on the end than other name-brand filters, so after-market end-cap wrenches may not work.

Wow thanks that was a fast response! Anything else I should do while the side panels are off? I will be installing the relay setup for the lights.

Purolator L10241 filters have the same wrench pattern as the original BMW filter, and are a common low cost non-BMW replacement.
