Another electro-babble. Radio isn't working right

I know the general concensus is to remove the stock radio, but I'm one of those *if it's on there it should work guys*, plus I'm not quite ready to take it off. I want to try it out and see how it works for me at highway speeds.

 

It will turn on and the volume works. The radio station scan buttons work about half the time. The handlebar controls don't work either. I got the mute button to work once, but that was by no means reproducible.

 

Is the factory radio just DOA? Any alternatives or options, short of yanking it out and leaving it out?
