Official January 2006 Death Valley Ride Announcement!!

Recommended Posts

Join us this coming January for the annual Martin Luther King Weekend Death Valley Ride January 13th-16th, 2006!! clap.gif

Your unorganizers Phil Degnan, Leslie and I invite you to a three-day weekend (or four! thumbsup.gif ) of BEAUTIFUL scenery, AWESOME riding, and even MORE AMAZING cameraderie!! clap.gif

The recent Recon Ride was a rippin’ success and I’d like to thank all those who joined us--GeorgeLT and Joan, flyingreg, JoeG, and graydude (Todd)! cool.gif Bruce and Jon you were sorely missed! frown.gif Based on the recon info and the consensus of the group: This year’s HQ will be:

[cue fanfare trumpets]

The Longstreet Inn and Casino in Amargosa Valley, NV!

The Longstreet is located at: STATELINE ROUTE 373 89020 right where the CA-127 North leaving Shoshone crosses the Nevada stateline and becomes NV-373. GPS: N 36* 24.758’ W 116* 25.330’ (right between the Middleofnowhere, Wherethfugawie and BFE! dopeslap.gif ). There is not much else there (the original Stateline Gaming House, gas station, an old saloon and a few shops) so if you blink you’ll miss it ( grin.gif ), but it is also only about 35 miles from Furnace Creek via the brand-spankin’-new CA-190! thumbsup.gif

Last year we decided to break from the previous traditional Village Idiot’s/IBMR location of staying at the Furnace Creek Ranch in the valley and moved to Beatty, NV (keeping the old date of MLK weekend), but the excellent old hotel and antique bar at the Exchange Club has been bought out and the restaurant and bar closed down. frown.gif Most all of the other lodging and decent food has also been bought out and closed down by a California investor intent on taking over the entire town. So this year we’ll be “Taking the Longstreet to Death Valley”! Come and join us!

What you need to know:

I just called the Exchange Club in Beatty, NV and all of our group reservations there for MLK weekend have been cancelled. If you had a reservation there (and had sent Phil a PM/email as he had asked) you should’ve already gotten a response from him with the new registration info for the Longstreet. If you’d like to join the rest of us, call the Longstreet at (775) 372-1777 and ask for the “BMW Sport Touring Riders Group”. If you wanted to keep your reservation in Beatty for some reason (about 65 miles north of Amargosa Valley) call them up at (775) 553-2333 and make a new one.

Phil has reserved us ALL 59 rooms and the group rates are: $50 per night for the two-bed rooms, and $55 for the mini-suites (which only have one king bed). If you get quoted something different, please email or PM Phil (pdegnan) and he will straighten it out. When you make your reservation you MUST secure it with a credit card, and if you have to cancel then you MUST cancel by Dec 10th, which is the cancellation date of our contract. Afterwards, all unclaimed rooms will be given back to the Longstreet and they open them up to the unwashed masses! tongue.gif Let’s see if we can fill it!! cool.gif.

If you have to cancel your group reservation after Dec 10th, your card will be charged. If you can’t make your plans now, watch this thread and we will let you know right before the 10th of December how many rooms are going to be released (if any), but you may be charged a higher non-group rate (up to $67.00/night) if you make your own plans after that date. There are only a few reservations made as of today (Sunday) so if you act fast you can still have your pick of the type of rooms, but the actual rooms are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis when you check in. Also, we only locked up all the rooms for the Friday and Saturday night, so be sure to tell them if you’re needing Sunday night as well when you call. Leslie and I are staying until Monday and taking a pass on the “Sunday night back to So Cal” traffic fiesta! tongue.gif

There was a fire there almost two years ago (lots of smoke damage, so all rooms are now non-smoking--but there’s some smoking in the bar and casino if you need a quick fix! grin.gif ) and everything has been newly remodeled as of a year ago last summer. Pets are allowed in the hotel with a signed waiver, and an open CC or $50.00 deposit and must be kept on a leash while on the grounds. There is coffee in the rooms (Warning: Nevada coffee! BYOC . . . ‘nuff said. grin.gif ), and hair dryers, but only data ports for Internet access. frown.gif The data ports were not working when we were there and no one seemed to know anything about it or care too much (it is VERY rural Nevada after all). They have fancy magnetic encoded keys and require a $5.00 cash key deposit that you’ll get back when you turn it in, so come prepared when you check in.

The hotel is two-story with one long interior hallway and there are about a dozen of the King bed Mini-suite rooms and the rest are two queen beds. Half of the rooms face the grassy knoll and lagoon (complete with ducks and jumping fish) and the mountain range on the east side of Death Valley (awesome sunsets! ooo.gif ), the other half face the street (VERY little traffic) and the snow capped peak of Mt Charleston (awesome sunrises! thumbsup.gif ).

There is a restaurant on site as well as a bar, casino (with penny, nickel, quarter and dollar slots! thumbsup.gif ) and a small convenience store which sells some package drinks as well (we should see if we can get them to stock up on some "Arrogant Bastard Ale"!! grin.gif ). There is Karaoke on Friday night and Jack Reeves was there with a live band last Saturday night! eek.gif We are still working on a reception and food for Friday night and may try to arrange something for a nominal sum each so we don’t have to worry about food Friday night after a long day of riding! We’ll keep you posted on how those negotiations shape up.

For those interested in camping or RV’ing/trailering your bikes out of the frozen Northern climes: there are 50 full hook-up RV sites on the property right on the other side of the grassy knoll/lagoon and the rates are $12.00/night for full hook-ups and $5.00/night for tent camping. You can’t beat that with a big stick! clap.gif The tent camping is just on the gravel there in the RV sites, so it’s not the best, but you’ve got power and water, you’re right near the nice grassy lawn (no tents on the grass unfortunately frown.gif ) and there are showers and laundry facilities right across the pond in the hotel/casino area. thumbsup.gif

All the roads are open with the exception of Dante’s View which should open in the next few weeks. We made it through the summer thundershowers rainy season, so the roads should stay in great shape for next January!! clap.gif

It would also be really helpful if you all would post to this thread if you’re in with a total body count so we can work on food for Friday night. If I’ve forgotten anything please chime in with your questions here. I can’t wait to go back!!

Friday and Saturday night in a clean bed, good food, awsome people, plus three fun filled days of riding the desert byways... IN Thanks to all the scouts for the hard work of putting this together.

As a Jack Reeves convert, I would not miss this event on a bet.

We'll see if we can get him back for you in January . . . if he's still alive by then! grin.gif

Hey Tank's in too!! Allright! cool.gif

Joan and George are in. cool.gif

Great! BTW, are you bringing Donna? eek.gifgrin.gif

IN! And I don't mind saying, Jack Reeves got better as the night "poured" on. blush.gif

Karaoke will be interesting with all the smooth crooners in this group. grin.gif

Tank, it'll be good to see you again. clap.gif Maybe we can get some riding in together. thumbsup.gif

Bill Rathbone (A-Red) and I are planning to attend this year. Weather of cours will determine the route as to how we get there. The fast way will be to slab I-5 to Bakersfield and then cross the Southern Sierra. And on to Death Valley.

Question. What is that pass between Bakersfield and 395 like that time of year. I left LA over 35 years ago and can't remember the name of the pass (Walker? and am to lazy to look it up). If it is snow boung then I assume I-5 over the grapeviene (or some other coastal derivative) to 14 to Palmdale etc. Please advise. Worst case we are snowed in and can't go anywhere.

Link to comment

Add Jan and I to the list. Reservations are made. We'll be staying Sunday night too.

It's almost for sure we will bring the two F650's and leave the RT's home. DV is a great place to explore and 50% of the roads are yummy nice dirt. Plus I just had a long (4400 mile) trip to Minneapolis on the RT. That will last me for awhile.

Ken R from Salt Lake City and his Dad will be comming. We will make reservations tomorrow.

For those who don't know the area. When the Longstreet fills up, thats it folks! No other hotel/motel even close to the Longstreet. You are going to be in the Park or in Beatty/Pahrump.

Steve, highway 58 out of Bakersfield will take you to highway 14 through Tehachapi. Tehachapi is normally open unless there is a heavy snow fall. Light snow is cleared pretty fast.

Stan, I believe Titus Canyon is open, perfect for GSers.

I've done Titus Canyon in a 4x4 but not on the bike. It's a really interesting place.

Thanks for reminding me.

849 miles...14.5 hours...hmmmmm....snow...

Anyone ever tried that?

grin.gif

Maybe you can catch a ride with Joel and Heidi! thumbsup.gif

For the rest of you: there are 50 RV spaces with full hook-ups and LOTS of great enduro/GS-type roads to beckon you to come to Death Valley in January. The last few years it was in the low 70's in the valley--in the dead of winter! clap.gif

And I don't know if Jack Reeves will be performing or not, but here's a review from a few years ago. grin.gif

Steve and Bill be sure to put this one high on your list--it'll make a nice get-a-way from the otherwise long PNW winter! cool.gif

Oh, and for you GS'ers: Titus Canyon is open!!

If there's likely to be a few feet of snow on the ground in January where you live, why not trailer out to the desert where it's a balmy 70*F and annoy all your friends back home with beautiful fun-filled pics of your "winter" vacation?! cool.gif

Looks like a bunch of other great folks are already coming--we sure hope the "Mile High Crew" and the rest of the "Northerners" can join us too! ( . . . and see if you can kick "Team Schauzer" off the fence for us as well, will ya? grin.gif )

Yes, Walker Pass is correct and is rarely snow bound. I will be traveling this route to DVD and you are welcome to join me if you wish.

Boy, I can't emphasize enough here to the group that it is important to secure your room NOW! before the Longstreet fills up. This will be a great winter riding event you will not want to miss. thumbsup.gif There are no other establishments for overflow. I hope to see many of you there, especially the ones I haven't met yet. smile.gif

I've had some inquiries about the group room reservation/cancellation details so here's a better explanation:

The way it works is, Phil's got $1000.00 of his own money on the line to reserve the ENTIRE place for those two nights so we can be assured of all getting together (in the hope that we can come close to filling the place up as well). In return, they gave us a break on the nightly room rate. They normally fill up on weekends in the winter--their peak season--and they were already booking other large groups and bus tours for January when we were there.

The last day to cancel is the 10th of December, and any un-booked rooms will be turned back after that point so the Longstreet can rent them out to others, but we are committed to the number of rooms reserved at that point. To secure the benefit of the good rate you pretty much either individually commit to the room or cancel by the deadline of the contract (the 10th). If it looks iffy or you can't guarantee your plans, you can wait until the last minute and get whatever's available (if anything's left). You would have to pay the higher regular rate of course but you'd have the ability to cancel the day before the ride with a full refund.

I would guess that even if you booked a room now and had to cancel, I'm sure you could find some other late-comer to take it off your hands to save the $40.00-$60.00. We had to do it that way to try to get the whole place and for Phil not to lose his "one large" that he's generously laying on the line for us.

I hope that everyone who wants to go can get a room, but there's always the much cheaper camping/RV'ing fall back option for those who want to go that way. Also, most of the rooms are two-bed rooms so I'm sure folks could bunk up if things got tight towards the end. We're a close group, right? grin.gif

Clear as mud? dopeslap.gif

This DVD is going to be an AWESOME gathering! The CA-190 is brand new, we're more centrally located to the whole park, we're only 35 miles from Furnace Creek via a beautiful ride into the Valey and everything's open! clap.gif

I-5 through Shasta is a beyitch to depend on, from Nov. to even April (snow & hail after meeting up with Fasterpill in CA in April). I-5 to below Eugene, then Hwy 38 to Reedsport on the OR coast is the lowest elevation, though I did 199 (Grants Pass to Crescent city) in Dec. once. (flurries and snow on the side at the highpoint).

Our Palm Springs vacation in Dec. just got changed to Big Bear in March, so now hankering to try to get to DVD in Jan. Don't know if I'll be 2 or 6 wheels yet. Will chat at ya next weekend.

Provided sidetoside dos'nt have any mysterious elctrical malfunctions (you know, the kind that couldnt possibly have anything to do with the number of gadgets you have wired in), this should be a glorious weekend! In fact, Kris may just ride 2up with me and Roburt can hang out and wait for the tow truck this time. thumbsup.gif

Hey Jamie, long time no see. You guys did a great job on the recon. I am "in" for the DVD ride , however, I will be solo unless I can convince some of my buds to drag their machines out of the snow and crank them up. Becca has a four month commitment and cannot get out of it. This should provide a good winter riding experience for all that partake. Hope to see you there.

Now that I'm deep into the paranoid stage of my life, I'm trying to figure out where this leaves me and Sun-joo. Not listed as an attendee, not listed as missing in action, and not a newbie. Where's this leave me???

Oh dang, I get it. It's a suprise birthday party for me!! Uh Oh, my birthdays this month. Can't be that. Not my wedding anniversary either. Not the summer or winter solstice (we Druids celebrate those). Not Sun-joo's birthday. Sooner or later I'll figure it out. You guys can't suprise me! dopeslap.gifdopeslap.gifdopeslap.gif

Of course there's always that other choice - You don't want us attending! See, there goes my paranoid side again.

Jamie, you're killing me! Arghhhh!!! I drove through this last evening on my way home from Western Wyoming:

Sighing, moaning and whining about this being the end of my riding season bncry.giftongue.gif. So, just to get cheered up a little I'm browsing this website and see that you all are planning a ride through Death Valley! Gorgeous country! Fabulous time of year to be there! It's 800 miles from home in January! No way I can do this! Curses!

Well, hopefully I'll get to see some of you in Gunnison in June. Have fun, carve a corner and hoist a cold one for me and all the others who can't make it but would love to.

Doug

Jamie;

I know your not busy working on the house, so maybe you should change that again. I made reservations first thing Monday morning. Sun-joo is sitting counting pennies trying to tell me we shouldn't go - but I told her I could cover the gas and we could mouch food off of fellow riders. thumbsup.gif (Please bring your table scraps back to our room).

Sooooo, unless the guys that keep watching my house and following me everywhere stop us from coming - WE'RE IN!!!

I still haven't figured out what the occasion is, but I'm afraid of missing out. I'm checking the Korean calendar, maybe it's one of those holidays and the suprise is for Sun-joo. O.K. I promise not to tell her. I mean it, I can keep a secret. Really I can.

Now, what's the secret???

"Honorary Dry Town Crew"? I'm honored, I think (I musta been wet town crew before this....).

Will you still let me in with an '06 LT? Ocean Blue, "My Blue Heaven". Take delivery the weekend of the 12th, now looking for wing-mates for a 600 mile break-in ride the weekend of the 12th, no route picked yet.

Now, if I can just find an avatar of a Blue 06 that's less than 100X100 pixels (who set that limit anyway - on an LT that's like a shot of the radio!).

What is it, 66 days or so to DV?????

Jamie, I appreciate your optimism putting Bill and I on the list. For all I know we jut might be seeing the coastline. But we will give it our best shot!!

Greg. As we get closer to the date I will be able to share our "real" itinerary and would love to hook up with you and others. Best case is we hit Bakersfield between noon and three on Friday and then assuming Walker pass is fine on to Death Valley.

Big Mak. Yeah lets discuss at Tech Daze. I am very familiar with I-5, and 199 as well. I went to Humboldt State 69-73 and drove those roads in all of the worst conditions, so I will be watching weather and road conditions starting the first of the year to determine the patterns. It will be a blast to ride with you!!!!
