Oil leaks/clutch service/spline lube

I have four mechanical jobs to do on my 1150 RTP

1) repair Cylinder head bolts that are stripped- oil leak

2) replace Clutch- slips under load

3) Drive spline lube- never done

4) paralever bushing replacement- using rubber chicken upgrade kit.

 

Is it better to pull the engine/trans/rear end from the frame and do all at once?

or take on each job separate?

 

time and money not the factor- just ease of repair.

No need to pull the engine and go to that extra complexity. Find a link about replacing the clutch is all you need. With the transmission out for the clutch you can lube the spline. You'll have to pull the FD for the clutch anyway, so while you have the FD off, if you have the tools and ability, you can rebuild the FD, bearings, shims, etc.

The cylinder head bolts just need a helicoil or timesert.

On these bikes there is no frame to speak of, the suspension/steering/tranny bolt to the engine. You do not take the engine out - you take everything else off of the engine...

 

FWIW, shaft spline lube is not needed on these bikes - the splines refered to in 'spline-lube' are the ones that interface with the clutch.

 

When I did my clutch-change a few years ago, I removed the FD/Shaft/tranny as a unit - this need two people to lift but saves disturbing a few other parts on the way.

 

In short, do the engine job in the bike - the other jobs require the whole back end to come off - try and get hold of a copy of "Ted's spline-lube" DVD, which will take you through the whole process.

Planning my summer vacation repair activities.

I ride the bike daily and it has 73463 on ODO.

 

Does the Shaft spline usually need replacing ?

It is worth checking the condition of the UJs, other than this the shafts on these bikes rarely give trouble. The shaft itself is in two parts - the rear UJ being splined into the main shaft which is two tubes inside each other and bonded together with a rubber sleeve. Rarely, this sleeve has failed leading to loss of drive. If the UJs fail, they can wreck the swingarm.
