Upgrading your iPhone 3GS to iOS4

My upgrade was uneventful, but there are reports of various problems.

The only one of these I've experienced is that photos are not rendering properly, but only photos that are sync'd not new photos taken with the camera ap.

I'm guessing we'll see a patch soon; and if any of these issues would be a critical loss of functionality for you, like no MMS, you might want to wait.

I wasn't aware I could upgrade. Next time I sync my iPhone on my computer, will iTunes offer the upgrade at that time, or is this an upgrade that you have to pay for?

I updated my 3gs yesterday. The whole process took about 15 minutes and I have not experienced any of the problems people are complaining about.

You need to click "Check for Updates". For whatever reason, it didn't prompt me automatically. My upgrade went very smoothly. Everything works well, a nice evolutionary improvement.

The updates aren't pushed out to iTunes. iTunes checks on a once-per-week schedule. You would have been prompted within a few days.

I'm luvin this upgrade. Folders are so nice as it the unified email Inbox. But it's the multi-tasking I look forward to truly enjoying. I like to listen to Internet radio while I work and I hate having to lose the station while I check my email or something. This is sweet!

Anyone here have the new iPhone release a couple of weeks ago? What is it, the 4G? How do you like it? Are you a previous iPhone user?

The 4G device has not officially hit the shelves yet.

I have preordered the iPhone 4 (as it's officially known) which is going to be released tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it! On a side note, Gazelle.com is buying back my older iPhone for $304... that's more than I paid for it!

3G is also upgradeable, just not the original.

I was going to say... I just did mine yesterday.

The only negative is it treats this upgrade as a new phone setup. I had backed up all my apps and some purchased music to I Tunes before doing the upgrade, and I was able to restore everything EXCEPT my mp3 library, which had been synched on another computer. I think what I need to do is import it to the I Tunes running on my own computer. Probably not a big deal but it's annoying.

The I Phone itself is simplicity. On the other hand, I Tunes is the most god awful piece of software I've had to deal with in a long time. It's REALLY confusing.

Man, I'm glad to see you write this. I always thought it was just me! I loath using iTunes. Aside from the fact that it runs slowly on my computer, it's awfully confusing.

iTunes SUCKS! It is the single worst piece of multimedia organization software I have ever seen. Its a shame they did such a nice interface with the iPhone and then royaly screwed the pooch with iTunes. iTunes is my number one complaint about my iPhone. I could probably sit and figure it all out, but its such a pain that I'm not even interested in learning what its capable of. I just use it for the basics of syncing, backing things up, and occationaly to listen to music.

Purely coincidental factoid, but Keith can out dance Michael Jackson. Also, he can play some serious basketball; he can jump in the air, do a couple of 360's, slam the dunk in your face, and do all this while talkin' big time trash!

I don't know if this has anything to do with his view of iTunes, but I thought it was an interesting piece of background information

Exactly why I am going to wait on this upgrade. 2 people at work had similar problems with it. My company gave me this phone (3G), I'm glad I don't have to pay the bill. I like having a pocket sized computer and the apps are nice but as a cell phone it isn't that great IMO and I wish it didn't need to have itunes to talk to my computer. And when is Apple going open it up so it works with my bluetooth GS911? probably never....which is about the same way I feel about ever owning an Apple computer.

On a related note . . .

I drove by the local Apple store at about 7:30 p.m. tonight and about 50-60 simpletons were already lined up for the 7:00 a.m. opening. Silly enough on a "normal" day, but about an hour earlier the tornado sirens were blowing and we were experiencing winds of 70-90 m.p.h. in the area. :S

Apple has done a brilliant job over the years creating a fairly large population of completely sheep-like followers who will line up a day in advance to buy ANYTHING that Apple sells. It could literally be a dog turd, but if Apple put it in a trendy box and ran good commercials, these sheep would line up to buy it...then they'd rave about how it was the most intuitive dog turd ever created and how it will totally change the way the world thinks about dog turds...and in fact....will completely revolutionize life itself.

It is pure marketing genius.

I tried to upgrade using an aftermarket synch cable I keep upstairs at the computer. Couple of phone calls while the phone was synching and it restored my phone to brand new with no contacts, music, photos etc.

I reconnected with the Apple cable and the computer asked me if I wanted to restore to the backed up info. I did and got everything back but the 26 photos I had on the phone.

Other than that, I don't notice any difference and iTunes says I'm at OS4.

My daughter says there’s a zoom on the camera and it lists where the shots were taken. Maybe I didn’t get the full upgrade or I’ll have her sort it out for me.

After upgrade, the photos on my iPhone were out of focus. I deleted them and re-sync'd to solve.

The only issue I had from the upgrade is I had to reset my voice mail password. Other than that, everything remains as it was before. I am loving listening to talk radio and not losing the feed when I task over to email or web or my Facebook app.

I spent a good (bad) 11 hours "upgrading" my 3G. It got into an endless loop of reboot, iTunes offers to restore, restore fails. Tried lots of things, but the only one that worked was doing a full factory reset, which meant that I lost any data that wasn't sync'd: text messages, logins in apps, bluetooth pairings, voicemail password, app layout, etc. Worst experience I've ever had with an Apple upgrade. Usually they "just work".

Do any of you guys use Apple's "Mobile-Me" app?

I keep getting the popups to install it on my computer and I keep declining. Getting tired of the prompts.

Upgraded my 3GS this morning after the

12 1/2 hour shift from hell...(cognitive

skills definitely somewhere less than 100%)

with no problems except the fact that the

phone did not recognize the ATT network.

After a call to ATT "Cuss"tomer service, and a

soft reboot of the phone, it finally recognized

the network and has been working fine since.

Jury is out, but I think it was because we are

on cell towers here that are secondary, not actual ATT towers. Anyway, all is good now...

I did the upgrade from Itunes 9.2 though

and installed Mobile-me when asked. I did not

register with Mobile-Me though...

Good luck all- first looks are cool...

Upgraded my iPod Touch. Love the folders. Now 60 apps on four pages fit into folders and take up just two pages.

Users, including moi, are reporting getting email messages that are marked "no sender" "no subject" and and "contains no content" on the iphone. They cannot be deleted, nor do they appear in the email accounts, either pop or imap. I have 8 of them on my iphone and it's a mystery, especially since they are dated 1969.

Lots of forums out there, but no solutions other than b/u and restore.

I had MobileMe for a year - I got a real deal on it ($25/yr) so I figured I'd play with it.

For my purposes, it was 'okay' at best. (If I could get the $25 deal regularly, I'd probably have kept it.) For most of the things it does that I'd use, I've already got better, more comprehensive and configurable solutions. For the majority of the remaining parts, I COULD have an equal or better solution if I cared to, and there are only one ot two things that seem to be unique to MobileMe's offerings.

For a non-technical user, it would offer a lot more, and it DOES have the advantage of having all of the functions accessible from one place. But as with nearly every Swiss-Army-Knife, all-in-one answers -- while it is theoretically capable of several things, it does none of them particularly well.

I upgraded this evening. Went off without a hitch and everything appears to be working fine. Guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I haven't played with everything yet, but I really like the folders.

I had REALLY bad battery life after my upgrade (Which went smoothly, btw). A hard-reset seemed to take care of that.

A few apps aren't working right, but they're all stupid apps that I don't really need, so that doesn't bug me much.

I don't like the changes to email. I don't like the unified inbox because I use different accounts for different things and I like keeping stuff apart. No big deal...I can just go to whatever account I want. But...they put the "Inbox" links on top...which means if I'm in my inbox and I want to navigate to another folder (which I do fairly regularly) I can't just go up and be at the root of my mailbox like I could before...now that takes me back to the email screen where I have to scroll down, select the account I want, then I can navigate to the folder I want. No a huge deal, but extra clicks that I didn't have to do before.

Folders are nice. And going through the process of putting stuff in folders helped me realize that about half of the apps I've got are crap that I loaded, played with once, and haven't touched since. DELETE.

I deleted and recreated the gmail email account on the iPhone and they disappeared. In fact, the emails on the iPhone never appeared in the gmail account folders.

Holy crap, I think I'm in the same boat. Mine is chewing through the battery quick today. I've only been unplugged from the wall for a little over 8 hours and its already down to 68%. All I've done with it so far today is check email 2-3 times (probably less than 5 minutes of actual use).

I've had some quirky things starting to happen to mine (3G) after the upgrade:

1. Noticeably more sluggish on some applications.

2. In landscape mode, the text window will expand to the width of the screen as normal but the keyboard won't, leaving a white box to the right of it. Sometimes turning it over a few times will correct it.

3. The battery icon doesn't display charge status correctly.

4. The sound won't route correctly over a headset adapter during a call.

5. I have received noticeably fewer booty calls.

One nice nit-pick is that they finally added the option to list birthdays on the calendar. Its a little trivial, but I am horrible with remembering dates and such. My old phone (Sony Erickson) always automatically saved everyone's birthdays on the calendar once they were entered in the contact info, so I got used to seeing them when I was making upcoming plans. I always hated that the iPhone always left them out when it already had the info saved in my contacts list. Today, I was messing around with my calendar and I'll be damned.......whats that little red dot? Its a birthday notification. Simple, but very useful tool for someone as forgetful as me. Of course I did take note that some of the dates were off.........Danielle's in particular was one day off. Her birthday is on the 18th (and that is the date that was listed in her contact info), but for some reason it was showing up as the 19th on the calender. Damn phone was trying to get me in trouble. I went back through all my contacts to double check the birthdays, and I had 3-4 that were off by a day.

I'm guessing we will be seeing a few weeks worth of mini updates in the near future.

Yeah, a little bit. Not in a bad way...I admire it and hope marketing people at business schools are studying Apple. Any company that can survive for so long in such a competitive market while they make such complete and utter crap...which is also grossly overpriced, has a frickin' brilliant marketing team.

That would be about normal for me (before and after iOS 4). When I said I had bad battery life, I meant...I went from 100% to 52% in 2 hours. 3G, GPS, and Wifi on. Bluetooth off. Checked email once. No phone calls. No apps running. No iPod usage. 2 hours in my pocket and it was down to 52%. A hard boot seems to have restored it to its pre-iOS 4 state...which is still terrible compared to my previous devices (an assortment of Blackberry's) but at least I can go a full day on a charge as long as I'm not using it very heavily.

MUCH MUCH better today. About the same network/WiFi use as yesterday, but I've had headphones plugged in and listening to music all most all day so far and I'm only down to 87%. Good call, the hard reset must have taken care of me as well
