I have 2" transmission backlash

Ian

Recommended Posts

Today when setting valve clearance using 5th gear wheel rotation I measured 2" of backlash at the rim of my 2000 R1100RT.

Ridden by me only 27K from new. I have read different posts about the amount of free play owners have with this model.

Is there any BMW data on this? Can it, and should it, be corrected?

regards,

.That's probably not a whole bunch out of spec, if at all. Think for a moment. It is not just transmission backlash. Crown wheel to pinion, pinion to driveshaft (both ends), 3 shafts and gear sets in transmission, input shaft to clutch hub. It all adds up and gets multiplied by the radius of the wheel.

Are you sure you are measuring inches, or could it be centimeters?

(Sorry....Just jerking your chain.....I could not resist).

Your post made me curious how much backlash my 1100RT had. I just went out and measured it and you'll be happy to know it's virtually identical to yours. Now we can both sleep better. :/

Ian,

Don't mean to worry you and the others unduly but I measured mine and it was 1.83977 inches !!!

Chain successfully jerked though ....

I actually used my thumb width twice for two inches as it was easier than using my pinkie 5.08 times :)

I read with interest that other R1100rt owners are experiencing the same backlash as I am, however how much backlash would we assume to be acceptable, I fear that mine is closer to 3”, and when I take up drive I can hear it clunk, Should I worry?

I was totally convinced that it had to be the drive shaft uj joint so obtained a replacement via ebay, upon striping down to access the drive shaft, it appeared to have no slap what so ever and that the backlash could be felt further forward from the output shaft through the gearbox, but I can not imagine how we get backlash through the gearbox,

The bike has been like this since I bought it 3000 miles ago, but it is disturbing me, does anyone have any thoughts on this, or am I to presume that this is normal and acceptable in view of the number of areas where backlash can show its self within the drive train

Afternoon David

You resurrected a thread from 2010 here.

You really should start your own thread on YOUR problem.

In any case-- 2"-3" of backlash at the rear tire is no big deal on an oilhead.

BUT it DEPENDS on how much lash is where-- If ALL the backlash is in the drive shaft then you have big problems. On the other hand, if, you have a little lash in the clutch splines, a little lash in the trans shaft gears, a little lash in the input shaft dampener, & a little lash in the drive shaft splines, & a little lash in the rear final drive gears -- that could easily add up to a normal 2"-3" of lash.
