One of my motorsports photography buddies, Harold Hinson, shared this with me. Not only does the North Carolina Highway patrol ride R1200RT's, but they also go ATGATT. I'm at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca Cola 600. The place is swarming with them, which is really nice to see

The California Highway Patrol has been using the RT's for a long time. I was persuaded into buying my RT back in 2003 by a CHP officer.

They also wear Olympia gear. Some of the used bikes get passed down to local police departments. I took a bike safe course from a Hillsborough cop that was riding an '04 RTP that was new to them in '08.

We had a brief conversation in which he was telling me about the lower gearing. I said that I guessed that meant that I'd have to outrun him at the top end since I couldn't beat him off the line. He said don't bet on it; his sixth gear would still be pulling when mine had pooted out. All my accelleration was in fifth and sixth pretty much just maintained it after a certain point. Anyway, I've never verified his theory.

I have......He was right. The R1150RT would definitely go just a bit faster with tighter gearing. The most I have ever managed out of top gear is 6500 RPM..... A good 750 RPM below the power peak. That was with the throttle pinned for over 30 minutes.

Your best bet would be to use your extra range to get to a gas station 5 miles further down the road than he could get.

+1 on the lower gearing. You're right at redline in 5th near the drag limit depending on wind conditon luggage, etc. That means you're fapast the HP peak. A shift to 6th drops you to 7000RPM, just below peak HP. So dropping the fional drive ratio drive by about 5%, which would give you another 400RPM at 130mph in 6th... would yield a a slightly higher top speed. You could probably approach 140mph.

But past 100mph, I'd guess any good LEO is going to back down and use the radio anyway.
