taters
i went to a bmw dealer only because they were have a bike day featuring a rider doing stunts. i parked the bike and a salesman asked if i wanted to sell the bike and get a new rt. i said nah, i can't get anything for it. it is an 04 rt but has 86,000 miles ..so the salesman says ,it won't hurt to ask. so i said ok. it has ohlins shock,a bill mayer saddle, top case, headlight modulator, hyper lights, foot pegs, shelf, extended warranty good for 6 more months, and a few more things. i watched the show for about an hour and i was ready to go and i see the salesman. he tells me what they will give me for it...good thing i did not ask to trade it in as i would have been shocked..i guess i will just give it to my nephew next year when i get a new bike.the dealership offered me $2500 Link to comment
moshe_levy
Was this Cross Country BMW in Metuchen? Of course they offered you nothing. You should negotiate a little, not take their offer at face value. I traded my '04, similarly equipped to yours but with about 68k miles, for $6k towards my 2009 RT. -MKL Link to comment
upflying
Never trade-in unless you don't mind getting hosed. Some people like the convenience and no hassle of trading in. You pay dearly for the convenience though. I always sell privately first and then I go bike shopping. Trading allows the dealer to manipulate, obfuscate and confuse the purchase of a new vehicle. Keep it simple, cash or financing pre-arranged before you step foot into a dealer. No trade..ever. Link to comment
David13
Yeah. The car dealers send out these "notices" in the mail. "We Will Buy Your Car !!!" Wow! How exciting? ... as a trade in on a brand new ... car from our dealership! Ah, lucky me. But, it can be hard to sell a bike privately, so sometimes it has to be done. You just get the lowest possible value on it. dc Link to comment
mbelectric
So whats a fair price Taters? You never stated that on your orig post.. Dealers aren't the least interested in your farkles. Adding the price of farkles to the blue book of your motorcycle doesn't bring the price up. They don't want them. They want original bikes in good condition. One person's farkles aren't anothers... Perhaps you should have explored the price of the new motorcycle and come to an agreement on price, taking into account YOUR added value trade in, before ya gave up so easily. Expecting top dollar on a used motorcycle takes a little negotiating. You never went to step two. MB> Link to comment
taters
i guess i was not clear..i was not looking to trade in the bike...the salesman approached me...i just did not think it was only worth 15% of its original price..now i understand that they don't care about farkles...i am happy with the bike...i will just donate it to my nephew...i will buy a new bike next spring....i have no bad feelings toward the dealer...i was just ignorant about resale value of bikes...lesson learned. i appreciate the input Link to comment
JFab
In my recent trade in of a '99 K1200LT for an '05 R1200ST the dealer had the ST listed at NADA average value. He offered NADA average value on my LT and I thought that was fair and accepted. I was looking to sell the LT anyway and had no inquiry's after 2 months on the LT forum, so probably wouldn't have gotten much more privately. I bought the LT used and put 70k on it in 5 years, so I got my money's worth out of it and no major repairs needed! Besides, now I'm in the boxer club! Joe Link to comment

OoPEZoO
Hey Tim, any chance that dealer might have any '08 or newer 1200GS's sitting around with good price tags on them? I know a certain R1100RT that is just begging to find a new home. My throwout bearing seized and melted itself this weekend on the way to the BRR. So I got to spent my weekend running for parts and doing minor surgery in the parking lot instead of riding. Then on the ride home it started running like complete crap and hesitating and bucking everytime I got into the throttle hard. If it doesn't shape up quick, its curtains. by the time I got home, I was about to get some marshmellows and toss a match on it. Link to comment
Rinkydink
I traded my '04 in due to the dealership closing and the availability of a "demo" with 400 miles on it at a steal. The $6K trade in offered was worth it to me considering what I got the 09 RT for. Oh, and factor in the 1.9% financing. In the end I will pay $280 in finance charges over 3 years. That is almost a cash price....Yea baby! I also stole a brand new Handy lift out of the showroom at a rock bottom price. Seeing as there isn't a BMW dealer within 200 miles anymore I will probably need it. It will come in handy ...no pun intended. Link to comment
DTM
Went to local dealer to trade my 07 f650gs in on a new r1200rt and was offered $4800. Dealer said sell it on craigs list and ask $6200. Well i got $6100, so it paid me to be paitent. And now I get to go shopping! Link to comment

Francois_Dumas
My 2004 RT (admittedly with less miles) still does around $10K last time I ask. For 2500 you better run it into the ground with 200.000 miles on it :-) Link to comment

Thats a "good" price for a brand new GSA I suppose, but I also think I would have to be insane to spend that much on a motorcycle (no offense anyone). I wouldn't even spend that much on a car. Not that I can't.....its that I won't. I guess I just have a mental block against it. Link to comment
Rich06FJR1300
i remember i went down to bike week in orlando in 2005, friend of mine went over to Daytona BMW with his 1999 R1100RT....they offered him $10,000 for his RT! plus transfer all his stuff over to the new ride (2005 R1200RT), how could you say no? But again, that's a high volume dealership and the timing was right. Link to comment

OoPEZoO
They still have a few, and while the prices are pretty good for a new one. The deal breaker is that they all have ESA and I don't want it. Its added cost up front, and added cost down the road. I think I would rather buy a lightly used one and spend the extra money on a setting up the bike the way I want it. I shopped for months till I found my current RT, and shopped for years until I bought my Jeep. The right thing will pop up one of these days.....until then, I'll just keep fixing the RT. Maybe you can earn some extra farkle $$ this summer by planning a ride weekend, then inevitably spending the weekend in the motel parking lot doing repairs. You could charge for a parking lot clinic. beemerboy
A couple of years ago I approached the local BMW (now part of the HD MoCo conglomerate) about trading in my '04 KRS on a new K12s. They offered me $4K for a pristine bike and after I told them what I thought of their offer they suggested I'd do better in a private sale. Well, they were right. I listed in on the innnernet and had it sold for $9.7K in an hour and then I took that money and bought a K12s from someone else. Link to comment

RavennaAl
This reminds me of when we tried to sell our ‘74 Challenger several years ago. My wife called some guy who had an ad in the paper advertising that they would buy autos. She started telling him about the car and he kept cutting her off, saying that the car wasn’t worth more than $900. She tried to tell the guy that the car was in great shape, had less than 60K miles etc., but all he said was that the car wasn’t worth more than $900. So, we sold it elsewhere for $3500, which was about what it was worth considering it was a Plain Jane 318 car. Anyways, the guy’s rudeness to my wife kept gnawing at me. I waiting a few weeks and then decided to call him up. I said I had a car that we inherited from my father-in law who recently passed away ( not true, I was just making it up) He asked what kind of car it was and I told him it was a Plymouth Barracuda. I barely got the words out of my mouth and he tells me it isn’t worth more than $900. I said but it only has about 30k miles on it and he says it doesn’t matter, it’s just an old car that isn’t worth much. I said does it make a difference if it’s a convertible? He says maybe it’s worth $1000, but that’s about it. So, I tell him that a friend offered me $2500 for it, and he says that I better sell it to him because it isn’t worth that much. I said, OK, but I have one last question, what’s a he my? He asks ‘what?’ I repeated, what’s a he my? There’s a big thing sticking out of the hood that says it’s a he my ‘Cuda. Suddenly his voice drops real quiet and he says, You have a Hemi ‘Cuda convertible???? I say, yeah, that’s it. I guess I’ll sell it to my friend. The jokes going to be on him, giving me $2500 for a car that isn’t worth more than $900. As I start to hang up the phone, I hear him yelling ‘wait!’ For those that don’t know, if memory serves me correctly, they only made 14 or so Hemi ‘Cuda convertibles in 1970, and I believe only 7 in ‘71. The last one that I know of that sold went for well over a million $. I bet to this day the guy is still kicking himself for not acting better on the phone. Link to comment

KenK
You can't compare trading in a bike to a dealer and selling it privately to someone else. What do you expect the dealer to pay you what "his" customer would pay? They have to make a markup. That's called being in business. Ken Link to comment
