My 04 Rt may be needing a battery soon. I purchased one from the dealer 3 years ago for $100. Today the same darn battery is $175.

What's going here? Is this just plain old gouge the customer?

Just a SWAG here, but I'd speculate that all of the regulatory and environmental compliance requirements equals a greater cost to the end user. Remember, businesses don't pay taxes, they just pass it along to the consumer. That and the risk associated with making a hazardous product adds to our cost. Sucks, doesn't it?

The price of lead has gone through the roof - mostly because of the high-demand coming from China.

Odyssey PC-680 shipped to your door anywhere in the US, $135.00. Older lead acid type (just fine in my books) under $100. Google PC680 and choose your supplier.

I'm guessing Andy is right about fluctuating price of lead, as I have seen Odyssey prices swing +- ~$15 from a $120 price point over the past year. The Chinese economy is humming again.

About the same Canadian price from Acme (AKA Northern) in Hamilton.

But a slosh battery would have to be free for me to consider using one in a bike today (esp. one with Tupperware covers).

You are lost in the dark about bike electrical system gain/loss unless you check system with a FREE ground-strap ammeter as described in my write-up at URL below.

I put the ub12220 in my bike last spring and I have been very pleased. I paid about $40. The folks at Stabb battery were very good to work with. I have no affiliation with them, however they did warranty a battery that was shipped doa. Can't complain about the price with this one.

I agree with Andy, we have seen the cost of marine batteries go through the roof due to the cost of lead. And then the Chinese send it all back to us in other products
