Well I serviced the old girl today.

New plugs, oil and air filter, and diff and gear oil done plus the old valves.

Bike was running great before and now its no better if a little worse and Im convinced its two things.

Its a little vibyer. I think this could be two things as I have had it before.

E ither the oild I use which I get a mega deal on which is a 10 40 semi syth oil insted of maybe using a 20 50.

Also Im not convinced about the twin max either.

Any thoughts

Lots of questions and some of them involve questioning your assumptions.

1. This motor will never be as smooth as a well tuned 4 cylinder bike. Heck, my 3 cylinder Triumph is smoother than my '05 RT.

2. Valves... how many miles on the "old girl"? If the O.G. is really young... give some time to grow. If she really is old.. then other considerations come into play. One of which is your skill and touch with the gauges. Not intended to challenge or insult. For all I know you may be a race tuner but- I had to ask.

3. The Twin Max works for me, but it actually has some weak spots, so if you really think it is the T.M. and you think the issue is throttle body synch, then build a manometer.

4. I thought I had a rough vibe and could not achieve essence of smoothness with my T.M. Removed the back and discovered a crack in one hose. Replaced both... followed the instructions carefully- it is now as smooth as it's gonna get- which may not meet your needs/desires/assumptions, etc.

5. I must ask if you ever messed with anything on the left side of the bike? Never do that. Cables, Throttle Body, or even installed wires under the Left Fairing and perhaps even moved one of the cables that are installed at the factory.

If none of this is even remotely possible... then embrace the vibes 'cause that is what you have.

Type of oil you use, as long as it is a accepted motor oil, will not cause vibration or alter the running of the motor.

i have found that i could never really smooth out the engine after a tune up like the dealer could, well i found out this winter after my wife got me a gs 911 for christmas, it allows you to park the stepper motors for a more acurate sync which translates to smoother engine operation and to park the butterfly valves to reset them to zero setting, these two things have really smoothed out the engine.

Not trying to be persnickety, but for the benefit of others who may be reading this and in the interest of keeping the info here as accurate as possible – The GS-911 does not (nor the dealer’s GT-1 for that matter), “...park the butterfly valves to reset them to zero setting.” Rather, it can control the position of the steeper motor driven air bypass ports on each throttle body. There are two functions the GS-911 does (related to the TBs); the first is to recalibrate the BMS-K module to the min/max of the steppers' range. The second is to hold them in a fixed same position (which is not zero) during adjustment of the right side throttle cable for best sync. at idle.

The gs 911 is not necessary to get a smooth running bike. I don't have one and have tuned many bmw's for myself and others. Most of us can and have tuned bikes far better than a hurried tech can.

You mentioned the valves. This is probably the ONLY thing that you did that would change how the bike runs. With that in mind, did you use 2 feeler gauges for each set (intake set, exhaust set)? Using 2 gauges allows you to adjust both valves to the same feel and will be more accurate. I am sure that there is a writeup on here somewhere with pictures. I would try to set them again using this method.

Uhh.... Ken - you don't do any adjustment on the TBs at idle, and especially the cable adjustment. The stepper motors do ALL the balance and adjustment at idle, and then lock in sync above idle. Trying to sync the TB's using a cable adjustment at idle is very likely to end up with a bad inbalance above idle.

Oh - I'll also add - I have never had to adjust the balance on my R1200R (36k miles/3-years) once I get the valve adjustment dead-nutz on. It appears the hexhead cable system isn't as prone to wandering as the oilheads were, and certainly much more stable then the airheads ever thought to be. I do the valves, check the balance with my TwinMax, then put the TwinMax away.. it's not needed.
