New R1200ST

Hello friends.

Well, I'm in for a bit of a change now. Yesterday I traded in my 1999 K1200LT that I've had for 5 years and 70k miles for a 2005 R1200ST.

I'm a little worried about the peg height and riding position but hope I'll be able to adjust and adapt.

I've just done a test ride so far and will be picking up the bike today after tires are installed.

Looking forward to learning a bit more about my bike from you all!

I have one of those, too. You will find that, as accessories go, the ST is the red-headed step child of the R series.

I never have adapted completely to the peg location, but that's mostly a function of my mis-spent youth. Counter-intuitively, I have the bars in the lowest position and the seat in the highest. No, I cannot explain it, but it seems to work for me.

Regarding the R1200ST's styling: yes, it is polarizing. However, once when I saw my bike parked among a group of RTs, mine looked like the fighter escorting bombers. (I'll catch some shit now)

Thanks for welcome everyone. I've added a few things to my profile. You'll see I'm in Texas 90 miles south of Houston.

I just got home from the dealer. It was a 120 mile first ride and I think we are going to get along fine!

I'm going to search for that MYRP wisdom now.

I can't let you stand alone on that comment Bob, I'm with you Bro!

Joe, welcome to the brotherhood of ST riders. I'm very fond of my bike after 18,000 miles save the marquis de sade inspired seat.

Welcome Joe,

Since various parts of my anatomy have been busted up over the years, I went with the Suburban machine foot peg lowering kit. Linkage You do loose some ground clearance on the left side, (because the left peg is out farther to clear the side stand) but the right side isn't bad.

I also flipped the clip-ons over the triple clamp. (But you need to buy a throttle cable for a R1200R)

Those mods really helped me for those 12 hr days in the stock (which worked fine for me) saddle.

Good luck,

Andy - your bike was one of the sweetest I've seen! I miss it for you! Have any second thoughts?

Loved my RSL, cklosest thing th o the ST BMW made in the past.

I think the ST is a wonderful bike.

Anyone who called it ugly becasue of the front lights must not have really ever noticed many, many, other bikes with much uglier front designs.

And, the ST stock lights work g=r=e=a=t.

I agree with all of the positive comments already made. The only issue i see is the peg placement for someone tall would be difficult. I'm 5-7 and find the leg room a little cramped. Mine is just about to turn 40K.

Welcome!! You'll love the bike. I have 59,000 miles on mine with no problems. As far as the riding position goes it is great. Compared to my Triumph Thruxton, it feels like "sit up and beg".

OK, it's agreed that the 2005 R1200ST, other than possible peg location issues, is the best thing since sliced bread.

Mine needs a new home. Just saying.
