Long ride.... for me

Well... I'm pretty new at this, and have been riding about a year. Made my second "trip" of about 350 miles each way. I can't imagine a 1000 mile day! I've read some posts about upgrading the seat of the RT... I have to admit my rear was pretty sore. On the way out, I rode interstates most of the way (I-95, 20, 26W); pretty intense. Coming back was more on the 4 lane state highways.... a little more enjoyable to me. I assume it is like riding a bicycle.... the more saddle time the tougher your tail gets. Am I just a whimp or what???

The R11RT has more fuel in the tank than I have callous on my rear (or strength in my back). I usually stop at 160 miles to stretch and get some standing time. It can be a short 5-10 minute stop, but limits the fatigue for me.

I have the original saddle. I have, as of yet, been too busy (lazy) to perform a modification to lift the front of the saddle so that certain anatomical elements are relieved from the crushing force of gravity. It is better with riding pants.

You will get used to it, but I am considering the aftermarket saddles. Most I ever rode in one day was 865 miles. That incorporated a 2 hour break for lunch.

Happy riding.

You should get used to it or you could always invest in a pair of padded bicycle shorts. :)

Bingo!

It takes some getting used to riding the Iron Butts. Work up to it. I'm sure you can do it.

I tried aftermarket seats on my RT, first a Sargent and then a Russell Day Long and now I'm back riding the stock seat. I have a sheep skin that I put on if my girlfriend is riding with, otherwise with my motorcycle overpants on I've found the stock seat suits me best.

The best $50 you will ever spend. Long Distance riding shorts. Get a pair. Also remember cotton is a bad idea. Baby powder or the like is good.

My riding intervals tend to be more time than distance dependant. At the start of the day, I find that I can comfortably ride for 2 hours before needing a break; this becomes 1 hour in the late afternoon.

I have found a Sargent seat to extend my comfort, but have never tried Russel, etc.

Highway pegs also extend my range to stretch out the knees

I like riding for enjoyment, so 350 is my usual casual day. 500 would be the most I would ride, even in a car.

I don't take endurance rides, I take joy rides.

The last few years I managed to do one long (2 week) riding vacation each year. That goes from Maryland to somewhere West, anything to or past the Rocky Mountains. The days crossing the Midwest are usually 700 mile days, some Interstate, mostly fast two-lanes. You gotta do that to get across Kansas/Nebraska/Canada. Once there it is 200 to 400 mile days to enjoy what's around me. I made the bike to fit me. Windshield to give smooth air, lowered foot pegs, Russell seat.

+1 on the tank having more miles than the butt. Taking breaks and walking around a bit makes an enormous difference, and IMO makes for a more enjoyable ride.

Modifying the "lift" in the saddle makes a huge improvement on the R11RT but I don't see the need for it on the R12RT.

I take joy rides for a long time. :)

Get a comfortable seat (I use a Sargent) Beads can help after several hundred miles (Bead rider) Stretch before you start to hurt.
