So i've got my oil, SAF-XO for the FD and EPX80W-90 for the trans, new stainless magnetic drain plug and crush washers....

Should I give the splines a lube when I drop the FD??

I think you should take pictures!

...the favorite lube is the Honda shop's Moly... I love that stuff.

Some say that it may be too thin. There is a discussion about this in the latest BMW ON magazine. I use BMW microlube. I bought one tube that should last the life of the bike.

There are opinions about lubes? Not to be cynical or anything, but I swear we would all argue about which color of bike is the fastest.

I still believe there's some old fart, riding an R51/3 with 250,000 miles, who has no idea about what oil he uses. And he's laughing at us all.

Haha, I am with you there :-)

There are opinions about lubes?

Well, it is a type of oil after all, so a resulting oil thread is almost inevitable. :/

The article I mentioned has some nasty pictures of splines that were not lubed properly, and the author was pretty specific about what lubes are recommended, and which ones should be avoided. He likes the Honda Moly 60 too, but mixes it with another one to give it more "tack".

Just sayin'. It's OK with me if this discussion stops here.

Slight hijack here:

Is the strut nut (07119904670 FLANGE NUT - M10-10-ZNS3) something that needs replacing? I believe it self locks and said to be used only once. Correct?

My FD needs a lube too . . .

No no no. I'm just laughing at how there isn't a simple answer to any question here. I wouldn't have worried about the lube until you mentioned it.

But I do think that red is the fastest. And has the fewest FD problems. Just sayn'.

Well, we BMW riders do tend to over-worry about such things.

Yes, the red ones are the fastest, and the best looking.

What does the author mix it with?

He mixes it 50/50 with Wurth SIG 3000 grease, whatever that is. He lists the Microlube GL 261 among the available options, but does not comment on whether he likes it or not. He also states that, "..unlike the questions 'what's the best oil' or 'what are the best tires', for spline lubrication there are right and wrong answers".

The author is Paul Glaves writing in the benchwrenching section of the April issue. He is a regular contributor, and seems pretty credible to me.

Fastest and best looking. Why does BMW even produce other colors?

Do most people replace this nut?? I am struggling to find it at Motorworks or Motobins in the UK

I have it replaced every time. Many don't, but I read that BMW calls for it to be replaced each time and I figured they might know a little more about that than I do. Besides, it's only a nut; it's not like it's a pile of money.

I've no problem replacing it, just trying to find it mail order as I can be bothered to make a special trip to the dealer! Mind you I could get the tube over to Park Lane in my lunch...

If it's a BMW nut, it will cost a pile of money. I broke a brass nut underneath my seat, and it was a $12.00 replacement. :dopeslap:

But I buy a new crush washer for my oil drain plug every time. I'd rather buy these things, because they should know better than we do. "Should."

Black is the fastest, of course.

The sun heats the tupperware and creates a temperature inversion that reduces the coefficient of drag thereby reducing the friction of the laminar airflow across the plasticy bits and, at least while Sol is exposed, increasing the top speed incrementally.

Either that or I made it all up and just strung a bunch of big words and jargon together. (I gotta stop watching so much political TV)

Of course. You're right. I'm just going to give away my red one and buy that new black '10 RT sitting on the showroom. I needed a valid excuse.

Don't forget the new recommended amout of rear drive gear fluid is 180 mm, not the 230mm as noted in the pictorial.

So had a whole day working on the RT yesterday, great step by step picture guide to remove fairing was ace! Really quite easy!

FD oil was merky, like a silver grey, not that bad really but she's only got 8K miles on her. Trans oil was quite dark.

Gearbox defo feels a bit smoother now (only going by the patent left foot "snick o meter".

Got my Starcom1 all installed as well as my Garmin 2610 on a Hornig mount, could'nt find the right cable to pipe sound into the comms as its a mono 2.5mm connector, that can wait though...

All in a good day, no problems.... oh, and the rear splines didn't have much lube on them, that must have been from the factory so a point to note...
