Weaping from cylinder head gasket

Had the bike serviced by BMW on Friday and found after a long trip on her the above. Took the covers off, gave the gasket a good clean and the mating surfaces and so far seems to be sorted. Have a bad feeling though. Thought these gaskets should last ages??

You talking about the valve cover gasket--or cylinder head gasket? Valve cover will leak if the donut gasket doesn't seal properly around the spark plug opening.

Cyl head is whole nother issue--bolts must be torqued just so-so. Haven't heard of any leaking yet.

OK; I've re-used mine over and over with no leaks so far. But with the round rubber donut gasket, when you are installing the valve cover, if you pull it *away* from the motor while installing it, you should then remove the cover altogether, reposition the donut gasket, and then re-install in one smooth motion. Pulling back while installing will almost always dislodge the donut gasket to where it will be pinched by the cover. And leak.

And in installing the outer gasket - both surfaces and the gasket must be oil free. Any oil left on them provides a path for weeping.

I did clean the outer gasket well, i would have expected the dealer to do that but hey ho! I am hoping its sorted now but time will tell.

Just out of interest, if it was the inner gasket leaking i am assuming it would come from the center (where the plug goes). My leak was (is) at the bottom of the cover.

Yes--unless it dripped or blew around there. If its coming from the bottom for sure, you better check the main gasket and/or replace.
