Steve Kolenda
I am looking to replace the alternator belt on my 2000 R1100RT and have seen posted somewhere where someone had made a special tool to torque the alternator belt. I think it is just an acorn nut with a spring behind it. I'm assuming the only purpose of the spring is to keep the bolt from sliding back. Anyone have the details on this device? Metric nut size, Spring size. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Steve Link to comment
ShovelStrokeEd
Not needed. Nut size is 13mm. Loosen all 3 nuts to allow the alternator to go slack. Do NOT remove any nuts. Remove the old belt and slip a new one in place. Insert a small pry bar (a little tire iron is perfect for this) between the alternator and the engine case. Pry up a bit and tighten the nuts. Check tension by going to the center of the belt and turning it between your fingers. When you really have to work to get it to turn 90 degrees, tension is perfect. Link to comment
