Rampant
So, I am thinking of nabbing that R1100, but I might also hunt for an 1150. is there anything I should know about the 1150 vs the 1100, particularly regarding reliability, etc. any reasons to hold out for the 1150 over the 1100? also, is there an easy way to test the ABS system is working on an 1100 without trying to lock the wheel while stopping? AndyS
So, I am thinking of nabbing that R1100, but I might also hunt for an 1150....? Hi Rampant, Which model - R, RT? What year? If you do a search you will find this discussion has come up quite a few times. I personally prefer the Late 1150RT due to all the little evolutionary things that have happend to the wonderful oilhead series over the years.Such as, gear box improved, surging removed, much better lights, the servo brakes on the late 1150's were significantly better balanced than on the very early 1150's. Ease of front wheel removal improved, slicker looking switchgear, Improved access to Battery, Improved Jump start accessibility, (there are many more, but as I say they are all very small insignificant things that in my opinion add up to a [slightly] better package). You will find many too, that love the 1100RT and they would argue from a 'simpler is better' standpoint. Both arguments have their merits. The bottom line is what is your budget? what do you prefer? The other point is that anything newer will have not been ravaged so much by time and the elements. Andy Link to comment
Rampant
this is the R1150R and R1100R Link to comment
Selden
It depends -- on which one feels right to you, and on the condition/price of the available choices. I have an 1100, which doesn't surge, shifts smoothly (for an oil head) and I prefer the simpler ABS and the cable-operated clutch. Whatever floats your boat is the "right" choice. Link to comment
Rampant
well, I like the looks of th 1150r a bit more. Other than that, I don't have enough experience to really know. I rode the 1100R and liked it a lot. Seems I might just go that route. It is not like I can't get an 1150R later! Link to comment

Rampant
it turns out this particular R1100R was mis listed as having ABS. (good thing I didn't buy it yet). How big a deal is that? What is a good price on a 44k miles R1100R without ABS? Link to comment
rob1100r
My current ride (2000 R1100R no ABS)I picked up w/1800 miles, BMW windshield and engine guards, new battery and 600 mile service for $4500 back in fall of '06. It was a steal. You can use that as kind of a guide...? 44K miles isn't that much for a Beemer, esp. if somewhat maintained.. Link to comment
Rampant
what is an R1100RSL like What is "RSL" I don't see those a lot. There is a 96 with 34k miles on it down here in my price range. Link to comment
James H.
I have a '96 1100RTL and was in your situation: not sure which model to hunt for. However, I let budget/price be my first level filter, then looked at mileage, condition of the bike, and maintenance records in that order. When I went to see the bike (it was an eBay offering) I was able to make further assessment based on the owner himself. As it turned out, he was a mechanic in general, had a history with BMWs bikes, and was meticulous about maintaining the bike. So far, I've been happy with the 1100. Link to comment
Rampant
may have found such a bike. Has all maint records. 33k, well maintained Looks nice. If we can find an agreeable price that is. What would be fair on a 96 RSL with 33k, bags, windshield, all maint records. Very good condition. Link to comment
r77toy
RSL is the same as RS except it has a "L"ower fairing around the engine. With the correct mounts, any of the 1100/1150 line will accept the same luggage and trunk as th RT. Link to comment
