Rampant
School me. Going to look at one tonight. Anything I should check for in particular? Stuff I should know about these bikes? has about 44k on it. Link to comment
BalancePoint
I would want to know how old the Hall Effect sensor is, if in doubt it's worth replacing since a failure will stop you cold. Also, have a good look inside the fuel tank. The liners in those metal tanks had a habit of separating. Finally, the throttle body on the left side starts tapping pretty loud after a few years, and may require rebuilding. And like any older Beemer- are the shocks worn out? All of these are points of negotiation. Overall, it's a pretty stone reliable bike. None of the things I mentioned should be deal killers. Link to comment
philbytx
I have one and love it Ask for service records....dealer and owner. If he's a "BMW guy", he should have his receipts Two main failure areas: Ask if HES has been replaced. Likely to go, $250 item including new Alternator belt! Ask if starter has been replaced. Likely to go, $225 to replace. Make sure gearchanges "snick" when they change and don't stick (doesn't want to go in) or kick at your toes. Does it have ABS? Again...check service records for flushes. If the owner wasn't a wrench (or anal), check for clutch lever adjustment.....should have a couple of mm slack at the lever and shouldn't slip at all. LPR1100RT
There are a few differences between an r1100rt or an r1150rt but overall both bikes are very reliable and 44k would be low on either bike. I think Twisty or one of the guys who's been around here for years wrote something up on this subject maybe they'll chime in. Also if you look up FAQ on maintenance routines that will give you an idea of what work "should" have been done on the bike by to this point. Link to comment
