kobukan
I'm sure you'll get some more input, but to get you started, the two are not necessarily related, though they may be. How much oil on the rear wheel, and where exactly is it - a picture would be helpful. Where is the play in the rear wheel: 9&3, 12&6, both? How bad? Link to comment
AndyS
That would be the (crown?), not the pivot in FD? If the FD pivot input shaft was leaking really badly, you'd see oil dripping / severe staining from around the rubber gaiter and blown backwards along the housing. Of course some may well end up on the wheel. If the crown wheel was leaking, you would see a different tell-tale trail. Like maybe oil mist thrown out over the disk and generally all the dirty staining would lead back to the crown wheel seal. If you suspect this, it would be worth whipping off the wheel, cleaning everything up in that area. Also unclip the FD rubber gaiter, clean everything around there. Once all back together, take the bike for a ride and monitor where the oil is eminating from. Andy Link to comment

Andy A leaking seal does not neccesary mean a bead bearing I had a pivots bearing problem, replaced them with bushings. Then my rear seal started leaking in the garage, but the bearing was in top shape. Replaced the big seal and no problems afterwards Link to comment

Replaced the big seal and no problems afterwards I have play in the wheel at 9&3 so I'm sure the bearings are going, just not sure how to check which ones. Orlando BMW charges $350.00 plus for the repair. Goes in Saturday. Link to comment
dan cata
It's easy to tell wich bearings are failing Put the bike on centerstand, then have someone press the rear brake. If the play is still there, it's the pivot bearings that have gone bad; if there is no more play, it's the big bearing :| Link to comment
kobukan
. . . I have play in the wheel at 9&3 so I'm sure the bearings are going, just not sure how to check which ones . . . If you have play in the wheel only at 9&3 it is most likely paralever pivot bearings. See below. Fairly common problem. They most likely need replacing if that's the problem - the sooner the better as it will only get worse. It's not that big a job. This would have nothing to do with the oil leak however, as there is no oil around these bearings. A small amount of oil leaking out of the big rubber boot at the front of the final drive occasionally is not uncommon and not necessarily anything to worry about if there is no drop in oil level in the final drive or transmisssion. Open the rubber boot and see if any oil comes out. A very small leak may eventually accumulate oil in the boot until it leaks out one day. Wipe everything clean, ride it some more and see if you see any more oil. Link to comment
