Oil, filter, etc supplier

I'm sure this has been asked but couldn't find anything via search.

I'm looking for a good (cheap) source for BMW oils (all 3 - engine, trans, FD) and filters. Got a new bike but I want to at least change the oils myself. And since it is new, I want to stick with BMW products for now.

Thanks in advance,

tsp - 2010 R1200RT

Sorry TSP. I couldn't help but laugh at the query. You have a $20K 2010RT and want cheap oil & filters? Staying with BMW branded parts and oil in my humble opinion is the only way to go during warranty. To expand on what Mike said, I don't know where you can find "cheap" BMW anything!

Some people may have scraped together everything they had to get the RT. Now he wants to save some cash. Maybe we should all start learning to conserve money. I think it's good to be smart and "cost effective."

I don't know how many miles you have on the bike, but the FD oil doesn't need to be changed now, though I guess some people think it's a good idea. Why don't you worry about that a ways down the road.

Transmission oil: buy 75w140 full synthetic from wherever you can get a good price. Don't go so cheap that you get Joe's Synthetic Oil. You can use the same stuff in both the FD and transmission.

Engine oil: look in your manual, decide which weight you need for your driving style. I use 15W50. Creepy clown guy (aka markgoodrich) beat BMW into submission with patient emails and phone calls. Any oil that exceeds SF standards is more than good enough for the bike. You will not violate any warranty as long as you use oil that exceeds SF. Mobil1 and other modern synthetic oils exceed this standard, and in fact, you can't even buy oil any more with an SF standard.

Oil filter: buy the BMW branded one, because some dealer or BMW rep may, thought I doubt it, but they may, make some claim that a generic oil filter (those note with a big fat BMW on it) doesn't do the right job and deny any warranty claim. However, I think that's an outside chance, but to be safe, buy the BMW. It's not that expensive, around $25 give or take.

Just so you know, the BMW oil filter insets a bit into the engine, so it's really hard to take out. You'll have to buy a "socket" that fits onto the filter making it easy to remove.

The only evidence-based information that I have is about engine oil, and that's because markgoodrich provided us with evidence of what is acceptable to our BMW engines. The rest of my stuff is just opinion, though I've done it, and it works. I can't tell if there is causality or correlation, but it's my opinion.

And you have every right to be cheap. Save your money for farkles like a GPS system or a new windshield, and save yourself some bucks. The 6000 mile service is around $5-600 at the dealer, and maybe $100 if you do it yourself. That leftover money can be used for a comfortable seat.

There is a general opinion, to which I agree, that in the R1200 series, different from the R11xx series, a 75w90 works better than a 75w140. I had the R11RT and the R1150R and shifting was better with the 75w140. OTOH in my R1200GS the 75w90 shifts better.

No argument regarding cost effective, not at all. Consider however the fight one might be in for if trying to negotiate a warranty repair with BMWNA when they're saying use of a non-OEM part contributed to the failure. Fat chance the few $$ you might have saved would then be considered "cost effective", be that a dollar issue or piece of mind issue. Don't get me wrong, I too scraped everything together I could to buy my first BMW and scrimp where I believe it makes economical sense. All said, for the little price of a filter and few quarts of oil here and there I beg to differ in your opinion for typical critical maintenance items. I’m not and would not recommend anyone going on the cheap to risk the big $$ if/when BMW says “we specified OEM, you used CCC (Cheap Chinese Crap)”. Now if I were living out there on State Street where the sight of a Ferrari, McLaren or Bugatti is atypical then I might feel differently. Affording anything out there past a meager living in what I term “my paradise” is mind boggling to me, especially when at 8am walking around the Hotel Santa Barbara I see as many beggars as people entering or leaving Starbucks.

The fluid specified by BMW for the final drive is a 75W90 GL5 synthetic, not 75W140.

You (and others) I think misunderstood my question. I specifically stated that I wanted BMW products. The cheap comment is meant as to where, if any, place sells the BMW products for a good price. I just came off Honda bikes and there are a number of places that sell Honda products at much lower prices that the dealers. And before anybody says anything about supporting my local dealer... there is NO local dealer. At least not within 275 miles.

Anyway... I never go cheap on oil and filters. I consider it the life blood of an engine. But I don't like to throw money away either. For example, my 600 mile "inspection" cost me $239. That's a lot for an oil change (all the invoice shows) but maybe they did other things like check the valve clearances.

This dealer has BMW branded lubes with good pricing http://www.webparts.com/products.php?sub_id=47

I've yet to buy from them, but I'm sure I will as my nearest Dealer is 90 miles away.

Enjoy your new RT,it's quite a machine

That is the old Hammersley BMW, now Crossroads BMW. I just purchased a part from them last week. Quick shipping and 20% off list. No issues with them (not affiliated in any way, have only purchased once)

In another thread there is mention that Hammersley/Crossroads is on it's way out as a BMW motorcycle dealer.
