rabbibgr
I am considering a 1200R as my main bike. I want to use it for local and very long distance touring. does anyone have experience with aftermarket bags, shields, barbacks, highway pegs etc. I want to be comfortable and minimize wind buffeting thanks Link to comment
awagnon
Hey, Don, Have you looked at http://r1150r.net/ which has an R1200R forum? Link to comment
Paul Mihalka
Out of the R1200R you can make a wonderful handy long distance bike. Saddlebags, the R1200RT bags are designed to fit, most of the bikes already come with the mounts. Windshields, a wide choice of aftermarket. Everything else is available, but for bar-backs and highway pegs I would suggest to ride it a few weeks first. You may find you don't need them. Here is my R1150Rt-lite that took me cross-country a few times: Link to comment
jaytee
Parabellum Scout Kaspersky says that link is bad bad bad. Might want to check it with your favorite web security software? JT Link to comment
motoguy128
I was never able to be completely satsfied with the touring set-up on my R1150R. I was much happier when I replaced it with a R1200RT. I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's true. Night and day improvement overall. But the naked roadster would be more fun scooting around town and it looks cooler. I tried a huge windscreen, but didn't like how it affected the steering and the turbelence in crosswinds was terrible. It was also ugly as all he**. I finally just used the BMW sport shield which has the best airflow characteristics, didn't vibrate much and I simply limited my freeway speed to 65-70mph and took mostly backroads otherwise. My R1150R loved crusing at 50-60mph on backroads. I also added a throttlemeister which as an added benefit had heavier bar end weights and reduced vibration. I had hand guards on it as well. I used Givi topcase, and still use it on my R1200RT. Nice case. My R1150R has BMW system cases. They are heavy and work well, but some Givi cases would probably work just as well... but might have ugly brackets when not in place. I also installed the tall BMW comfort seat. It gave me more leg room and was slightly more comfortable. Link to comment
Don_Eilenberger
Hey, Don, Have you looked at http://r1150r.net/ which has an R1200R forum? +1 - as another Don, I highly recommend the R12R subforum there. Good group of knowledgeable people - friendly too. And REAL R1200R (the do-anything BMW..) enthusiasts Link to comment

JT Works for me, just tried it. Just do a search parabellum R 1200 R bmw scroll down from home page on left for windshield options and the scout fairing Link to comment

rabbibgr
Hey Paul, Your bike looks great, I assume it is a scout fairing and a meyer seat. Where did you get the panel to replace the rear seat ? Also, does the scout fairing control buffeting, I dont mind wind but the buffeting is a killer. appreciate your advice Link to comment
Paul Mihalka
Yup, it is a Parabellum Scout fairing and a Russell Daylong seat. The rear panel is a BMW part that was standard on the R1150R Rockster. Stock it is silver, I painted it rough finish black. With a bit of playing/adjusting the Scout fairing was very smooth. I think I did something with brackets and spacers to tilt it a bit farther back. Link to comment
moshe_levy
The R is truly a fantastic machine. My wife's former 2004 R1150R was all set up for touring and indeed took her across the country and back without incident. Here it is in Walnut Grove, Minnesota: System Cases, a Givi 52L topcase, and an Aeroflow Touring 2-piece windshield, and you're set. 1,000 mile days - not a problem. -MKL Link to comment
