Quiet at Cold start but load tapping after engine warms up > 4bars

Howdy Folks - Have an R1100RT (96) and noticed the right cylinder begins to tap rather loudly as the bike warms up over 4 bars. Did two separate (a month apart) valve adjustments just to make sure they were not the problem - minor tweaks but all within spec. All done on a cold engine. Still tapping loudly after the oil warms (yes just changed oil and filter). Up graded from 15W50 to 20W50 and the noise might be a smidge quieter but not by much... The tapping does not go away when I rev the engine and can be heard even at 4000 Rpm.

Help...

I just checked - spec for Rocker arm is between .05 - .3 and we set it to .18mm

I just took an Audio/video with my cellphone just need to know where and how to attach the file so someone can hear the tapping if that would help.

.18mm is pretty loose for end play; the closer you get to minimum spec, the quieter the valve train will be. My theory is that BMW quotes such a huge range because few owners would be willing to pay the labor cost to get it "just right." Having the same clearance for each rocker is probably more important than achieving the minimum possible clearance.

I wonder if you have a throttle plate that is worn. I did not keep my 1100 over 100,000 miles, but I understand the plates can get worn and make noise in the same area.

Chuck,

It is very likely that it is your RH Throttlebody adjuster tapping against the stop. Only proper way to check is to take your tupperware off and hold your finger on the cam.

The Rocker arm gap was set to .18mm

The intake gap was set to .15mm (.006 inch)

the exhaust gap set to .30mm (.012 inch)

Just took a stethoscope to the cylinder and it sounds like it might be tapping from the lower/rear side of the cylinder - near the block but still from the cylinder...

(I fly helicopters for a living, I know squat about bikes :o)
