I'm thinking of doing the Natchez Trace in the next couple of weeks. Any advice, info, etc?? North to South, South to North? Both ways? Camping, places to stay, see, and eat? :S

The north is a loooooooooot more interesting.

Plan fuel stops carefully, as they are few and far between.

At the north end, eat at the Loveless Cafe (right where the parkway ends).

Watch for deer, turkey, and bicycles. Oh, and bugs in the early morning.

It's a fun ride, but nothing the the BRP.

It's worth doing once, maybe. The Northern fifth is the most interesting. I mostly remember fallen trees and monotony in the southern half. Maybe it's in better shape now than the last time I rode its length (2008).

If you've got a couple of weeks I'd plan a different ride, unless of course it's a check-mark you feel like you want to make. Both my wife and I found it pretty boring.

Drink plenty of coffee to stay awake. Food wise there is a great cafe at the Nashville end. Can't remember the name but the fried chicken is the best I have ever had.

All the dotted lines of indicated scenic and you guys say the best part is heart attack on a chicken plate at the north end....Man is youse guys jaded.

Maybe, just maybe some of us have never been there and done that. Kinda like the twisties in Kansas and Nebraska. Give us some hope, man!

I had plans for the Dragon between the Chicken rally and the ROK and find out the road is closed due to landslide, won't be open all summer. Maybe I'll ride the Blue ridge at the posted limit and test the ABS for what it's worth.

Plan your trip. It'll be as interesting as you make it. There are camping opportunities (you'll have to check into this).

I rode the Northern half last summer and LOVED it. Beautiful, serene, much history, time to contemplate, very little traffic. A candidate for my most zen-like ride ever.

OK. So maybe up the 'Trace' and over to the BRP and back down. My friend rides a Victory so's I have to travel at his pace. :P

I rode the southern part (from Jackson, MS to Natchez) Big Solo and enjoyed it immensely! Ain't as exciting as Arkansas hills or Smokey Mountains, but it's fun and relaxing and most enjoyable.

Nobody will have to worry about keeping up. Its a straight, level road. The speed limit is like 50 and they enforce it.

Like others have said, the northern part is the best. On the Mississippi section I had to stop at the historical sites just to keep from falling asleep. You might want to consider picking it up at the half way point, you won't miss much.

Hiya Chris.

On further consideration.............gonna do the BRP. Then maybe muck around over in West Virginia. And then back.

Dave. Have you ever done 84 south from Monterey to Sparta? I have a friend with a house near there and was really blown away by that road. Only thing, I was in a Ridgeline. :P

I'll save the N T for another trip. Thanks for all the info.

  • 3 years later...

I've been planning a 2-up Natchez Trace ride for several weeks, and while I don't mind riding in light rain, a forecast of thunderstorms and possible tornadoes is an entirely different matter, so my wife and I are going to do it in a Honda Fit instead of on 2 wheels. We have reservations at historic B&Bs in Natchez, MS, Houston, MS, and Hampshire, TN, so we're locked in to whatever the weather will be.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. In a car, it will be much easier to stop and take in historic sites. Since we live in the SE, there is always the chance of a do-over.

Enjoy the Natchez Trace as it’s a fantastic history tour. If you would like to try a restaurant off the beaten path, go eat a Doe’s in Greenville, Ms. The food is great and you will have lots of Memories from your dinner.
