Maybe it is slipping in lower gears, just not enough for you to notice. It sounds like the clutch is either worn out, contaminated or not fully engaging for some reason. With 18,000 miles an '08 should still be covered by warranty, unless the clutch is worn out, which would be hard to do in those few miles.

6000 rpm red line is above 7,000 the bike will run 128 on a gps I do not believe it is equiped with a speed governor. At 6000 rpm the tack climbs fast and the speed does not ......of you ease off the throttle it will lock up again

Look at the underside of the engine where it meets the transmission and check for any oil dampness. If it's not dry, could be some leaky input/output shaft seals that have contaminated the clutch (BTDT). If so, warranty should cover the seals AND the clutch (it did on mine).

I've also heard of instances where the clutch slave cylinder has leaked with the same results. With only 18K I doubt the clutch is worn-out (unless you've been doing alot of drag racing or other activity requiring lots of time slipping the clutch).

If you look at the rearmost part of the engine/oil pan it bulges to the rear forming a kind of shelf (for lack of a better word). On top of this "shelf" is where I noticed oil collecting. I actually didn't know it was there until I started smelling burned oil from where it was running off the back of the oil pan and getting heated up by the exhaust.

I believe only bikes capable of over 188mph (300kph?) are equipped with speed govoners as a gentlemens agreement within the industry to avoid governement backlash.

IF my calculations are correct, a stock RT 7500RPM in 6th is around 140mph. But I think top speed is going to be drag limited at around 125mph in 5th... maybe 135mph in 6th with a tailwind, no cases, in a tuck with the windscreen in the low position. Some folks in Europe could probably confirm this.

Actually, I think hte cutch is slipping in all gears, but it's less noticeable sicne you're accelrating more quickly.

Did BMW change the clutch disk starting in 1/2008 which was done to solve problems of early failure ? Anyone knows if this is a fact?

In general, if a bike/car with a dry clutch is slipping only in high gear your disck is on its way out.

18K miles is not unheard of if you tend to ride the bike like a wet clutch bike, slipping the clutch often and for extended periods, especially if you tend to do it above 2K RPM.

Not the case- slipping the clutch - have over 4,000,000 miles on BMWs with dry clutchs- I Never had any issues for 1976 to present

just got defect parts - it happens - let's see

early 2006 clutches

key ring antenna

fuel pump relay thing

rotors - wheels

brake caliper. Abs wiring rerouting

fuel strip

windscreen struts

un even pad wear on electric brakes

etc.....still think it's the best bike for me

BMW has been good about resolving issues

> 4,000 000 on BMW dry clutches first issue - sorry not the rider 17,000 is just darn silly-

the disappearing dash - almost forgot - bring a hat for your dash

So no it's just some bad parts - last bike had 60,000 ran like a top ....sold for a new one
