CarlosB
Hi Graeham, I'm to sure how to get this to you thru the forum, but I'll try to send you something that might help you thru your email. Carlosb Link to comment
T__
Graeham the engine number should be on the engine block forward of & below the right cylinder.. Not sure where the Federal sticker is but try under the seat,, or inside the glove box door (if it has one),, or maybe even look inside on the back side of the side covers.. Twisty Link to comment

Graeham White
Engine number is 1802 6044 is that the correct # of digits. I am missing the Federal vehicle safety standards sticker that should be stuck to the right frame side- can I get one from the dealer? Got the tire inflation, finish code, emissions label, and max loading. Is this a normal issue to register an out of state cycle? Link to comment
T__
Graeham, yes, 8 numbers.. That engine was the 44th engine produced in the 18th week of 2002 & the 5th digit (6) means it is an opposed twin.. You can try to get the federal sticker from the dealer but that might be a difficult task.. Usually,, in most states you at least need the emission sticker to prove it isn’t an illegal gray import.. Might be the same for the federal sticker (check with your DMV).. Twisty Link to comment
essman
When I bought my 2003 last year, it came with a bunch of documentation form the state of CA. I registered it in NH, after scaring the hell out of the driving population of CA, and I had no problems. Probably varies state to state. Link to comment
DonW
If this came straight from the CHP, AAA doesn't seem to be able to do it. I took my '04 R1150RT-P (retired CHP, never registered as a civilian) direct to the DMV and they were able to do it using the VIN. Don Link to comment
R1150RT_MLC_Response
Fortunately we don't seem to have these problems down here. Registrations are completed a number of ways. You need a road worthy certificate which is issued by a government licensed mechanic and then you go to our equivalent of the DMV. I had to let the clerk at the DMV sight the VIN and engin number. She had a small torch on the end of a flexible stick that made finding the engine number easy and easy to read. Maybe a torch will help. Good luck. Link to comment
Woodie
What state are you in? That might provide better (or at least more relevant) answers for you. Link to comment
upflying
I am missing the Federal vehicle safety standards sticker that should be stuck to the right frame side- can I get one from the dealer? I doubt it. The reason is because the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards sticker contains the VIN and date of manufacture. Removing and tampering with the FVMSS is illegal. Replacing such a sticker would also be illegal for obvious reasons pertaining to auto theft. That said, the FVMSS sticker could have been removed during past collision repairs. If that was the case, some documentation should have accompanied the bike stating that fact. Link to comment
Graeham White
Thanks for all the help Of to the DMV or/and the CHP Graeham Link to comment

CarlosB
Don't know about now , but years back I was missing frame numbers the DMV here in So.Cal. sent me the to the CHP where they put on numbers of their own gave me some paper to hand DMV and title was in the mail. Link to comment
upflying
Called an application for an assigned VIN. Only CHP auto theft investigators can issue them. http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk_pdf/ch22_Corrections_and_Adjustments.pdf Here is what they look like. Link to comment
notacop
When I got my RTP from Long Beach BMW it took 6 monthe of waiting for the plates. State of Cal to A&s to long beach to BMW NA to gawd knows who and back again. I didn't care I was riding a B&W and the LEO's ignored me and the squids flinched. It was great! Maybe your bike was an undercover bike and has no registration...... Link to comment
Graeham White
ALL fixed,Thanks for the help. The 2002 R1150RTP had a thin metal foil sticker that is factory impressed with the VIN number. The problem is the glue is not Pressure washer proof. It is placed on the head tube next to the stamped VIN. I ordered a new decal from Long Beach BMW- 2 months- from Germany CHP was able to verify the bike is a Federal and State OK and VIN and Engine were present, even though bike is not in DMV data bases. Got plates and insurance after CHP broke the "cant help you" circle. Insert CHP joke here______________________________________________. Link to comment
