McQueen studied the martial arts under Bruce Lee. Lee often said that among his students who were not already accomplished martial artists in their own right, McQueen was probably the most gifted fighter he ever taught. He felt that if McQueen had chosen a career as a fighter instead of an actor, he would have made quite a mark on the sport.

130 motorcycles in his garage. Also inducted into the motorcycle hall of fame. He did most of his own stunts unless the insurance company said no way in which case Elkins did his double. But to give you an idea about how great a MC rider he was, here it is.

When he was shooting the great escape, Mcqueen was on a MC being chased by a nazi on a MC. Well the nazi chasing Mcqueen was actually Mcqueen himself because they couldn't find anyone else who could follow the chase seen. So they had to cut the film up and edit Mcqueen chasing Mcqueen. It gets even better. When he was a young boy, his step father used to beat the crap out of him until one day steve said Im gonna kill you. So his stepfather had him sent to a juvenile home. Many years later when he became a star, he had a reputation for not signing any movie deal unless the studio gave him bulk quantities of things like toothpase, razors, toothbrushes etc. What he then did was send all these bulk supplies back to the juvenile center to help the other kids out. He was quite a guy and a good man who did the best with what he had.

I remember reading that in the iconic chase scene in Bullitt, Mr. McQueen tried to do the driving, but was unable to get it done to the satisfaction of all concerned. The only important scene that they actually kept was the one where he overcooks a turn and locks it up - then backs up to make the turn.

I remember watching On any Sunday and seeing him goofing with Malcolm Smith, et al - he was definitely NOT your average superstar movie actor. A real 'no rules in a knife fight' kind of guy.

On Any Sunday was THE catalyst that got my blood going for motorcycles. The Great Escape is still one I will quit surfing and watch. That guy Joel Robert had some influence on riding and racing as well.

Every time I start thinking the world is all bad, then I start seein some people out there having a good time on motorcycles, it makes me take another look. - Steve McQueen, 1970

He has always been one of my favorite actors. He is also the only actor I ever saw in person. He was visiting Anchorage Alaska in the late 50s or early 60s. He went to a local taxidermy shop that also was something of a museum. They had a stuffed brown bear that stood about 12 feet tall. I happened to be in the shop when he came in.

Not too many like him in "Hollywierd" today. He was a veteran too. The "Great Escape", one of the best movies ever made. Much has been said about the motorcycle scenes in the movie but my favorite part is when they are handing out the hooch they made to the brits. Somehow I can't picture McQueen befriending Hugo Chavez or believing 9-11 was perpetrated by our own government.
