American Family rates for Blackbird in outer space...

Even though we're covering 2 bikes, 2 cars, house and umbrella, with excellent experience, AmFam rates Blackbird as "superbike" and liability is atrocious.

Suggestions for finding other coverage appreciated.

TIA

A buddy of mine was in a accident last year and his bike was totaled. He had progressive and I was *totally* impressed at how they treated him. Covered all his gear and all his accessories.

I switched from Bikeline to them after that and my rates were lower with Progressive.

I was actually going to buy a 'Bird back in 2000. I made the mistake of leaving a Cycle World article about the bike on the kitchen table. My wife saw it and read, "This is the fastest, most powerful motorcycle Honda makes" and that was it. NO WAY ARE YOU GETTING THIS BIKE! But...but...

Bought an RT instead. And the rest, as they say, is history. Excruciatingly slow history, but history nonetheless :smirk:

Progressive did really well by me when I biffed my ZRX1100, and even better by me when I bought my ZX-11.

I'd at least give them a shout.

Even though I had 20+years of motorcycle riding experience, Progressive wanted to bill as if I was a new rider in California because I only had my California endorsement for less than a year.

I called Foremost and they didn't care what endorsement I had, only my number of motorcycle riding years. While I've never had to collect on the policy in nearly 8 years (knock on wood), I have swapped bikes in and out of the policy every other year and they have never gouged me and always charged a fair rate (in my case, <$500 a year for full coverage on whatever bikes I've had from liter V-twin sport bikes to 1700cc cruisers to $13,000 beemers).

FWIW.

Just did a Progressive online quote and it's much lower (1/3 of AmFam) for full coverage whereas the high quote from AmFam was for liability only. Waiting for Foremost quote.

I was with Progressive... notice I said "was".

I had them for years. No claims. Decided to add the Ducati to the stable... not only did the rate for the Ducati blow me away, the rate for the RT went up as well. Progressive would not explain why, and I insisted on one-on-one discussion with a real manager in their underwriting department.

This person basically and in no uncertain terms that they would not tell me their pricing algorithm and take it or leave it. I went to Dairyland... not only did I get a rate for the Ducati of about 1/3 of the Progressive but the RT came in lower as well.

signed... Happy Camper...

OBTW I hate the Progressive girl enough to cancel a policy even it was free... so there.

Anothr OBTW... Our member FUGU may have some thoughts for you on Progressive's "service" after he totaled his RT... he was "serviced" all right but how long did it take? and how many threats of legal action, etc

Called a local Dairyland (independent) agent and bought Progressive liability insurance - no collision, medical, etc. The agent's quote for Progressive coverage was lower than on the web. The agent said that's always the case but didn't say why.

Laney and I have found good discounts through simply buying two K1300 S's...
Adopt me and maybe we could get even lower rates.

That just reminded me...

We wrote our car insurance through Progressive, but via our AAA agent. It was far cheaper than doing it through the website alone.

...but the 'Bird is a superbike...innit?

No. The 'bird eats superbikes.

(Interesting bit of Moto trivia: Someone at Suzuki has a good sense of humor. Hayabusa is the Japanese word for Peregrine Falcon. One of the Peregrine's primary prey: Blackbirds. )

The resurrected CBRXX was taken on its first real ride yesterday. A short, errand run turned into a 50-mile excursion. It was the first time it had been out of the neighborhood since being refinished.

The front forks need rebuilt, but otherwise, it performed flawlessly. There's still some small things it needs and those parts should be here next week. Other than that, it's just normal maintenance issues.

A friend asked if I intended to sell it now that it's fixed and the answer is a resounding "no". Having a GS for longer distance and comfort; the '73 Duc for the sunny, Sunday afternoon rides; and, the Honda to satisfy when the need for speed expresses itself is right where I want to be, even I did get here in via a serendipitous route.

They're all old bikes with 50 years of combined "experience" for less $ than a new, stripped down GS. I love old bikes. The smile per $ factor is huge.

Nice pictures. Looks like you have your bike lift in the kitchen...
Yep...makes having company for dinner a bit difficult, so we only invite riding friends who understand. I clamp a sheet of plywood to the lift and everybody sits around it to eat.

That's kinda funny, but the guy at Suzuki might have missed the point. From what I've read, the name "Blackbird" was a nod to the SR-71, the world's fastest aircraft:

No Japanese parakeet could ever keep up with the "real" Blackbird.

Have you tried Dairyland? They did great when Deb totalled her CB750....our rates for both bikes are ridiculously low - $350 a year!

I amost bought a blackbird beofre the RS. I called for insurance and had sticker shock. Geico put the bike in the ultra high performance category. The RS is just some sport category. I was able to get the RS insured with full coverage for less than liability only on the blackbird. I dont think insurance companies are very fond of the supersport bikes.

I called the Dairyland agent who, as it turns out, is an independent agent. I spec'd the bike and my driving history and her computer spit out Progressive as having the lowest premium at $235/yr for $100k/$300k liability coverage only.

AmFam was $900+ which means they simply don't want the business.

Geico was at just a bit more than that around 975-1000 dollars per year for full coverage, 100/300k. Are you sure they just werent quoting you full coverage? or do you have something on your record?

I am 32 and getting coverage on a blackbird was the highest I have ever been quoted. My RS is about half.

My AmFam agent was very clear. The quote was for liability only. To his credit, he advised against buying the AmFam product until getting other quotes...like he really needed to tell me that.
