Retired At LAst
I have a bad windsheild switch. ( The screen will only go up not down). and I checked everything. Took the dash out, both releys are fine. I took the green switch apart and found that if I depress the little button manually the screen will go down but when reassembled it will not work, seems the little down extension is not long enough to depress the contact switch. It dosn't appear to have broken or worn down. Has me stumped. Any ideas??? Can I buy just the windsheild switch somewhere rather than a complete handlebar and have to rewire everything and solder all the points. Thanks Link to comment
kiwiaudio
wanna trade? mine goes down but only on rare occasions does it go up ! I have yet to dive into the switch, but fully expect to find the bimetal spring and contacts are dirty. I've had to bend the metal spring in these switches before to generate tension again, but as I said, I have not been inside this one yet. I'll let you know if I see something that may help you out. May even do this today. My first ride of the season yesterday reminded me that I intended to fix that over the winter. Where would we be without a memory? Hold on, I already know !! Link to comment
kiwiaudio
Well, I was going to pull my switch apart, but after further checking I can hear the relays working on mine in both directions. Screen still won't go up though. Assuming there is actually a relay for each direction I suspect the output side of the up relay is at fault. Sorry Retired, but none of this helps you though if your switch is actually bad. Just to see what the switch was about, I did dive in there and to me the switch seems like a sealed unit. Not at all like some I've repaired in the past. Link to comment
kiwiaudio
Ok, well if I trade the relays, the fault goes the other way and the shield wont go down. Trade them back and the shield wont go up. One of them must be bad ? Does that make any sense ? Link to comment
kiwiaudio
Twisty, would you mind elaborating on your comment: "It should be two relays that flip (reverse) the windshield motor power/ground to make it go up or down.." I cannot decide if one of my relays is bad, or I have a wiring issue ? Link to comment
beemerman2k
I had this happen to me on my RT a few years ago. You can futz with your current unit, or just go buy a new switch. Costs about $50 if I recall. Easy to pull off the old one and pop the new one on. Works like new afterwards. Problem solved. Link to comment

I cannot decide if one of my relays is bad, or I have a wiring issue ? kiwiaudio, yes 2 relays.. With ONLY two wires coming out of the windshield motor the ONLY way to reverse it is to switch polarity on those wires.. I haven’t ever looked inside those relays but my best (GUESS) would be that both relays are double pole single throw.. SO again my best guess would be with no switch power/ground they are both defaulted to ground the windshield wire going to that relay until powered by the switch (easiest/simplest way to make it work) .. That way when the up switch is pushed it only has to ground the “up relay” pull in coil & pull the contact off the ground contact & connect it to the battery power contact.. (up she goes) Same with the down-- when the down switch is pushed it only has to ground the “down relay” pull in coil & pull the contact off the ground contact & connect it to the battery power contact.. (down she goes) This doesn’t help much as it could be-- a relay,, or a wire between the switch & relay,, or the switch itself,, or the switch ground connection.. Might even be the power to the relay in question (either battery power or ignition power,, they have one of each to each relay.. Twisty Link to comment
kiwiaudio
Ok Twisty, that makes sense. In my case though, when I trade the relays, the fault trades also. Doesn't that mean one of the relays is bad? Link to comment

Doesn't that mean one of the relays is bad? kiwiaudio, yes I would think so as the swapped relay uses the same switch ground path, same power & ign power & inputs the same motor wire as the removed one so that should A-OK those things.. Only leaves the relay (at least it looks that way) .. Twisty Link to comment
kiwiaudio
Ok, thanks Twisty. I'll get a new one and see what happens. Appreciate your help ! Link to comment
