CoarsegoldKid
Has anyone used Permatex Ultra Copper for exhaust header gasket or pipe into pipe sealant on any vehicle? I'm wondering if it is a PIA to remove when the time comes. Link to comment
Joe Frickin' Friday
The joint between the exhaust header and the head should have a factory-made gasket in there; no need for RTV sealant. Header-to-cat joint on my R1100RT didn't have any kind of gasket or sealant on it; I presume the same is true of my R1200RT. There's not a lot of pressure inside the pipe at that point, so leakage won't be very high, even without a sealant. I would think that using a sealant here would just make a mess of things. CoarsegoldKid
I should have mentioned that the inquiry was for use on another bike with aftermarket headers and exhaust pipe. The header gasket is of a very thin design and aftermarket systems are prone to not being flush/ square to mate the head. The pipes further on down the line are spring loaded slip fit pieces. There is low RPM deceleration pop that I would like to address. Leaks in the exhaust system can cause the symptom as well as a lean condition. I know it is lean. But I wanted to make sure there are no small leaks I've heard that Permatex has a higher heat spec muffler sealant that may be better than the Ultra Copper Sealant. But if any of this stuff requires a chisel or lots of elbow grease to remove I'll refrain from using. Link to comment
Fran
I have used a band type muffler clamp with a step down design that provides a 360 degree seal, and the step down feature allows for nice sealing between the smaller diameter pipe that inserts into the larger pipe. Made of stainless, it is wide but does the trick superbly. I think the brand name is Tourque Tite, not sure however. Fran Link to comment

Joe, I have recently used Versachem Exhaust System Joint and Crack Sealer on a leaky joint in a full remus system I bought from a forum member. After 3000+ miles I can say it has sealed the leak between clamped joints and was about as hard to clean up as hard, dried mud - that is to say a PITA but not unduly such. I have no idea as to it's eventual longevity but the past several months have included a lot of commuting over bumpy SoCal freeway joints and several bombing runs through the local mountains. For the price, it plain delivers. JT Link to comment

Wasn't a problem to break loose later. A little harder than normal, but it's always a PIA for me. Be careful not to over-do it and get the sealer on the O2 sensor if you use it on this joint.
