brennaman
Yesterday I bought a Toshiba USB hard drive for backup. After I installed the backup software and started backing up my software I noticed how slow my computer became. I was just using it to back up 2 folders not the whole hard drive which amount to just about 50 Gig. I knew there was a problem after about 8 hours it had still not backed up what I wanted. (USB 2.0 is not that slow) Well I decided to take it back and remove the program from my PC, and I accidentally removed some other program and I'm not sure which one. Now when I start up my computer this message comes up during start up: 3rd Master Hard disk: S.M.A.R.T Status BAD, Backup and replace Press F1 to resume. Pressing F1 and the startup continues without any problem. Any Idea's. I did try a system restore. No help Thanks Link to comment
BanjoBoy
It sounds like the Tosh hard drive is plugged in while booting, and your system is trying to boot from it? If you un-plug it and re-boot do you get the same message? I prefer Seagate Hard drives myself, never tried one of those Toshibas. Good luck, Link to comment
yabadabapal
I don't think there is a need yet for a hammer. If you press the F1 it should take you to a series of options and by using your up and down arrows you should be able to choose the option that lets you start up from the chosen startup method. I think in terms of what you may have lost, simply find the "restore" menu which will give you the choice of entering the date that was the last date you used the computer when all systems and files were in tact as you wanted them to be. Enter that date, hit enter and your files and operating system should be restored. Good luck! Put the hammer away for the time being. Link to comment
Jerry Johnston
If you bring up the bios (usually del key or F1 when you 1st start accessing the drive after turning it on - depending on what make computer)you can turn smart off on that particular drive. It means that drive is going bad or doesn't work with smart enabled. Link to comment
Jerry Johnston
Here is a free Scanner to test most hard drives...... HDDScan3.2 Link to comment
Skywagon
Why not simply restore your pc from the day before. Got to start, all programs, to accessories, system tools, system restore. Pick the last known good date and restore. You will lose everthing you have done since that restoral date, but that probably isn't a big deal. If you have something you want to save post the restoral date, just copy it off to a disk or memory stick before you do the restore.. Link to comment
brennaman
Sorry to post a question then head out of town, my son and I are camping. I did try to restore from the previous day, no good. I have XP and was told I could make a complete backup on DVD, then put in a new hard drive and all is good. ( go to my comp.---Local disc---properties---tools---then backup) I tried to do this, but I do not have the right permissions. (damn HP) HP is so proprietary. I got into the BIOS trying to give myself permissions, but could not figure out what to do. I may just bring it into a PC repair shop, I have a new harddrive, they will just have to get it over. I know there are software manf. out there that have what I need, but for a one time deal, may be cost inhibitive when I figure in my time. I will try to figure something out when we get back.
