r1200RT filler cap

I don't know if others feel as I that the fuel filler on the R1200RT is backwards. When Cary delivered me my bike one warning he gave me was "be careful not to damage the fuel filler cap". Is there a way to turn the filler cap so it opens forward making it easier to insert the hose from the back? Has anyone tried this? Am I missing some reason why BMW did it this way? thanks everyone

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Some of the RT's quirks I find mildly aggravating, but I'd never thought about the fuel filler cap. When you fuel, turning the handlebars out of the way of the fuel line might help you.

I've never thought of it either in 52,000+ miles on my RT. That said, I do always fill the bike from the right side.

A friend of mine had done this to an 1150GS...he said I should try it,as it makes filling up a little easier.

Looks as if you have saved me the trouble ;)

BTW,I don't find it difficult to fill the tank with the cap as stock.

The concept that was explained to me is that if the cap popped up during an accident, perhaps sliding your privates across something aimed in the direction you are heading might be less painful than something trying to stop your movement.

Odd, while I have no trouble with the fuel filler either, I nearly always fill from the LEFT side! I just move the handlebars out of the way before fueling. I do have to partially unhook my tank bag and move it out of the way to access the filler, but that's not much of an issue.

I'm not sure if they'd be the same, but reversing the fuel filler is commonly done on the R12GS. I believe you need to either bend or file off one of the alignment tabs but it is no big deal.
