The East West divide?

I was just reading the latest shoot out about this years hot, must have supersport http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/videos/2010/march/mar1010-video-bmw-s1000rr-is-king/bikes in Motorcycle News

when a thought occured to me.

Do us Europeans favour high tech, cutting edge over dependable performance? We don't have the vast, sparsly populated areas that you have in the USA/Canada/Australia and if the worst happens (i.e. a technical failure) help is relatively near to hand. We would struggle to get more than 50 miles away from a filling station in the UK (if we forget the north of Scotland!).

Well,

I could be a smart arse and say that the plethora of H-D's in the U.S. might dispute that "dependable performance" argument - but I won't

On a (somewhat!) more serious note. Yes, dependability is a concern to me. However, I bought the RT in 2002 as I loved the bike which was promoted as the best LONG DISTANCE tourer. The only other REAL rival at the time was the Honda ST1300, which didn't do much for me. The RT has around 240 miles between fill-ups plus I do have an excellent roadside assistance programme and an Air Evacuation subscription !

I'm sorry about the link, I'm not what you would describe as "fully computer literate"!

Basically after a couple of days of manic riding around a Spanish test track MCN have come down in favour of the European entrants -Ist place to the new S1000R followed by the Aprilia V4, MV F4, KTM and Ducati 1198 - over all the Japanese offerings and then promptly admitted that if they were to try and carry out 20 tests consecutively that the order would probably be reversed.

As I said originally perhaps we Europeans rate alleged technological superioty over "boring" reliability (with all our motorcycles) because the reprocussions of failures are possibly a little less serious in our relatively densly populated environment.

I hope that's a little clearer. Note to self - don't write new posts at midnight!

It may just be that bike reviewers like the gadgets because they're more fun than the reliability that they never see. I'm sure it's also true for car reviewers as well. Wouldn't you rather test drive a Jaguar XKE than a Volvo S80? Especially if you didn't have to live with it later.
