pdes
I picked up my new RT 2010 yestarday Part of the deal with the squealer was that they would transfer some of the electronics from my "old" RT (available in the "Classifieds" section!). One such piece of kit was my Nautilus air horn. However, they called me during the day and said that they could not fit it to the new bike as the space around the forks was different to the 2008 model and the horn could not be fitted in. So, my question is, has anyone else fitted a Nautilus, or any other air horn to the 2010 RT? If so, where did you mount it? Cheers Link to comment
tsp
Are the horns on the 2010 RT wimpy as*? Haven't had a BMW in years but they used to have awesome horns. tsp Link to comment
pdes
The 2010 seems a little beter than the 2008 but they are both "wimpy"! In the UK we have 50cc bikes refered to as mopeds (not sure if you do in the US) and it sounds like those - very embarrassing. I had the Nautilus on the 2008 and it made the switchers and twitchers on the motorway take notice!! I have just ordered another compact 139db horn that should fit the gap using the original fittings so I'll report on that as soon as possible. Link to comment
tsp
Do you have the space and mounting locations to mount two horns (hi & low note) instead of just upgrading the one horn that comes with the bike? My Honda ST1300 came with only one horn but I mounted 2 Fiamm horns as soon as I could. On the ST1300 it was very hard to find a place to mount them. I put them where normally the fairing speakers are located. Not the best placement but better than nothing. tsp The 2010 seems a little beter than the 2008 but they are both "wimpy"! pdes
Difficult to know if I have enough room as I am not familiar with the product. I have already ordered the replacement but to be honest, they are cheap enough to try a couple. Link to comment
Craig McKay
Hi pdes, I have just ordered another compact 139db horn that should fit the gap using the original fittings so I'll report on that as soon as possible. What was that other horn? Stebel Magnum? Is it loud? How did you get on fitting it? I'm about to get an R1200RT/2007 and I'd like to install a beefier (aka less 'wimpy') horn for the lane monkeys... pdes
Craig, I responded to you through ebay! Good to see you found your way here! Although I don't think that there is any difference between the 2008 and 2010 model, I heeded the dealer's advice and went for a smaller horn. I used a Seibel 139 db single electric horn on my 2010 bike. It came with a strip of metal that I bent and used on the existing mount. You will need to open out the mounting hole as the bolt is a little bigger. If you do decide to go down this route, good luck with the mounting bolt. It looks easy enough to get to - until you try!! I got there in the end with a star driver bit (T40) and an open ended spanner. I haven't got the 2008 bik at home so can't look to see what i did with the air horn and i can't remember!!
