Bungee Buddies

You know those ubiquitous plastic bungree buddies all the Oilhead riders (me included) have on their system cases? See http://www.cyclegadgets.com/products/product.asp?Item=BBUD I need to put a set or something similar on the new 2009 RT, but the case material looks thick as all hell, such that the buddy's thread won't be long enough to make it through any hold I might drill. Maybe a trick of the eyes, maybe not. I'd rather find out for sure before drilling holes. What are you guys using to hold your bungees nets down?

Actually - there is one spot on the case face, near the top where the inner and outer cases come together, and disassembly isn't needed. Let me see if I have a photo of where I put mine..

Found one:

You can see the Bungee Buddy in the upper left corner of the bag face. That is about the only spot where the two halves come together.

I will note that even though I have the BB - I've never used them. I find a set of RokStraps make for a nice secure load.

Dear God, that is way more involved than I want to get for some Buddies!

I have Piggback straps which I can use instead on the existing rails - no muss, no fuss.

Thanks, though!

MKL, on the 1200RT’s you can’t put a lot of up pressure on the side panniers as the locking & mounting system is different that older 1100/1150 panniers.. Probably enough for a net though..

You might Google “footman loops” as those would fit your usage.. They are used on a lot of boating applications so can be had in brass with black powder coat or chrome coating & are pretty darn rust resistant..

I don't use bungees to pack real luggage. I just use a net once in awhile for small items when my cases are full.

But don't you loose things when you use bungy nets for small items? I gave up with them after loosing

a gym bag stuffed full of gym cloths (years ago). They stretch with time and eventually you will gouge the paint.

A fabric tail bag or a strapped-on seat bag for small items would be better (IMHO)

No, never lost a thing and I've been using them for well over 100k miles. No gouged paint as the tips are rubber covered.

Thanks for the tip Twisty - I'll check it out.

The 1200 bags are functionally crappy compared to the old 1150RT bags. Fiddly latching mechanism, layered so bungee buddies are harder to install, and where's the cargo net on the lid portion of the case, like the older model had?

I bought Buddies for my RT when I got it, but never put them on. I used longer straps and hooked them around the frame in front. The old RT doesn't have that opportunity, so you need the BBuds. I found a spot to hook the rear too. I think they go around the back, under the carrier and to the opposite side, criss-crossing under the top case carrier.

In short, I'd find another way to mount your straps/bungees without BBuds. It's possible on the Hex RTs.

The case parts come apart fairly easily, and there is space for bungie buddues if you position them right, between the case inner and outer parts.
