? about R12GS service

My buddy is buying a 2006 R1200GS this weekend with 14k miles. Bike was bought at an auction so there are no records. I want to show him how to do a full service II on it. I am going to assume that it is 90% like doing a R1100RT... Are there any good write ups with the valve adjustments etc anywhere? Got a link?

Plan to do the following:

valve adjustments (is this simple like the R1100?)

TB sync

plugs (2 or 4?)

final drive oil (1 qt?)

tranny oil (1 qt?)

air filter

engine oil/filter (5 qts?)

Front/Rear brake fluid flush (DOT4?)

How about the clutch fluid?

Did I miss anything?

Thanks!

There are some significant differences between the 1100 and the 1200 series you need to be aware of:

Valve adjustments – The same

TB sync – Only the right side cable is adjusted at above idle. There is no idle sync adjustment (at least not without the GS-911 diagnostic system) and there is no ‘large brass screws’ to adjust like the 1100 series. What looks like might be them on the TBs is NOT and should not be touched.

Plugs – 4. Disconnect the small electical connector from the on-plug coil before attempting to remove the coil from the plug. DAMHIK.

Final drive lube – 180 ml. On the ’06 the FD must be disconnected and rotated rearward and down to drain it via the drain plug at the 9’oclock position. Do not overfill! 180 ml only.

Transmission lube – I can’t remember the exact amount at the moment, but basically until it over runs the threads at the upper fill hole.

Air filter – Straight forward albeit a bit of a pain to get to. You do not have to pull the tank as some manuals suggest. Just fiddle with releasing the intake housing. There are two rather large side out plastic retaining clips.

Engine oil & filter – Same as the 1100

Brake flush – DOT4 is correct BUT there are BIG differences between the ’05 & ’06 ABS and the 1100 series. Basically the ’05 & ’06 1200 is serviced as the ’02 to ’05 1150 series ABS is. If you aren’t familiar with that, you must learn it. See the FAQ section here for some info. I can’t emphasize this strong enough - if you attempt to do a standard bleed you will (perhaps permanently) damage the ABS system.

Clutch bleed – The clutch is filled with mineral oil not brake fluid and does not require any routine service.

Have fun!

14000? Do the fluids, check the valves and tires then ride the crap out of it. The things not even a quarter broken in yet! Thats a good score right there, congratulate your friend for me.

Oh and do not mess with anything on the throttle bodies!!!! If you move any of the screws they have to be sent back over seas to be reset on a special flow bench or some other wacked out thing! Basicly you are better just buying new ones if you adjust them, seriously... Just check the cables for slack and to see if they are properly seated and then adjust from the right side. These bikes are reallt pretty consistant and need little if any adjustment.

Basically what you need is here: http://www.jimvonbaden.com/R1200_24K.html

Look around at the free pictorials and the rest is there too.

Jim

Thank you! Just looked through the FD oil change. What a PITA.

Spark plugs, sounds like the ones on my 3 series (individual coil on each plug with a neat locking connector on top)

Valves, no problem.

TB sync, just do cable adjustment at 2k/3k rpm...

Tranny/Engine oil, no problem.

Brakes... I remember there were issues that it had to be done from the top of the ABS unit on the R1150 with the servo brakes. LOL, just read the procedure. I'll tell my buddy to pay the shop to do this. Friendship only goes so far... ;)

I am appreciating my R11RT more and more...
