Runs bad after repairs

Hello, I am a new poster after monitoring this sight for many years. I haven't had any thing to contribute so I just listened to what all of you had to say until now. I have caused myself some real problems.

Background,

I have a 99 R1100RT with 39530 miles on it and my last ride it was running well. I decided to do some preventive measures this winter so I replaced the alt. belt, instaled the new camm chain tensioner and marded the hell effect sensor then removed ,checked the wires. the wires seamed to be good so I coated them with liquid electrical tape and reinstaled. After putting it all back together the bike will barely run. It runs real rough while backfiring, shaking, and won't idle.I thought the timing chain may have jumped a tooth but after removing the valve cover and spark plugs it looks like it is in time at TDC.

Any suggestions as to what I could have screwwd up?

It does sound like you may have jumped the timing chain. But it could be anything you touched.

Review everything.

I have seen very difficult to line up timing marks on some vehicles, and also some that were just wrong.

Oh, wait, hell effect sensor. It is giving your bike hell. Oh, sorry, I guess that's not funny.

Give some of the others time to id this right on target.

Physically check the throttle cables are properly seated in thier ferrules. It is easy to dislodge them whilst working on the bike and the miss-match can cause the symptoms you report as the LH body has the throttle position sensor for both throttles.

Since you would have to remove the gas tank to get to the HES connector, I would suspect the throttle cables being pulled out of the ferrules also or maybe the electrical connector for the tank isn't fully seated?

BUT - you may have doomed the HES wires by playing with them. If the insulation was bad under the wire clamp (and inside the wire wrap) moving it around could have caused the wires to short together. Is your tach bouncing around when you try to start it?

Yep, throttle cable not seated in the ferrule. Just happened to me about 2 months ago. Sounded like an old diesel farm tractor starting up.

Oh wait, it always does that

Thanks for all the info. I will remove the right side and check that cable Tuedsay. The weather is getting good and I have a pile of parts for a bike.

I would check both sides.

Up date,

Thanks all, I found the right side throttle cable not seated. Now all is well and it runs sweet with no chain clatter.

Life is good. Now all I need is a long ride.
