Optional Dealer +1-3 Year Coverage - PURCHASE?

Recommended Posts

Just got a new '09 RT from MAXBMW. This is the first new motorcycle I have purchased (many used). I plan on keeping the bike for 5+ years. The closest MAX Dealer is about a 3 hour drive, which on this machine I never mind. So...do I get the extra coverage? It's a little over a grand (for +3 years). The peace of mind alone would be nice for a feller like me, but I'm also a business man and value value. What say you my liege?

You can buy the extended warranty later at the same price as long as your bike is still within the factory warranty by time AND mileage. Lots of things can happen during 2 or 3 years.

If you plan to be a high mileage rider definitely buy the extended warranty at the right time. The nicest thing about them is that they are unlimited mileage.

Which company is underwritting the warranty?

I would find that out and research this insurance/warranty co. first.

Also, you might want to see which items that they do not cover.

I have never dealt with Max BMW but I see their name all of the time so they are probably a good dealer. Doubt that they would steer you wrong but they are in it for the money as we all are.

I envy you. I keep trying other bikes but I always come back to a RT. I am on my 6th one. Yes, I have issues when it comes to motorcycles. Love them.

Enjoy-

A word of caution. The extended warranty is quite restrictive. A year ago, when my bike was only a year old, I had a rear arm changed as it was showing signs of corrosion. Now, 13 months later and 2 months into my extended warranty, the new part has corroded in the same way. Dealer is pushing back saying that corrosion is not covered under the extended warranty! Also, a year ago, a brake rotor was changed as it had become distorted. Now I have the same problem but the same line is being used - "not covered under warranty". So, think carefully. Are the engine and gearbox likely to fail? Is the risk worth the investment? I don't think you will find much else covered.

Ask for a copy of the actual warranty contract. I've found LOTS of differences between companies and policies.

Contego - the company the BMW-MOA has a discount deal going with, has fairly inexpensive policies, with very easily understood policy rules and exceptions. They Emailed me a PDF of their policy almost immediately on request.

The company my friendly local dealer sells has a policy written in teeny-tiny-print, with absurd requirements to keep the policy in effect, such as oil/oil-filter/AND air-filter changes every 3,000 miles. If you don't have proof of a dealer doing the changes the policy is invalid.

The Contego policy only requires manufacturers required maintenance and makes note the DIY'er can DIY and provide proof via receipts for the needed parts/materials.

So - my advice - REALLY READ the contract. Also note that the standard dealer markup on a policy is 100%, ie - if they are selling it to you for $3,000 - it costs them $1,500 to place the policy. There is a LOT of room for dickering.

FWIW - last time I checked Contego - they were roughly 1/3rd the cost of the dealer policy, and IMHO had better coverage and policy requirements. I'm just waiting on the MOA to find their discount code (they seem to have lost it) so I can apply for one.

Don,

If you are an AMA member they discount for that as well.

I think both discounts are the same amount but not certain.

O.K. you brainiacs, here is a question for ya.

Are the after market extended warranties covered by the same laws as a manufacture's warranty?

I can not remember the law which applies to them but it is the one that says that there can not be a restriction on, say , oil brand without it being paid for by the manufacturer .

Inquiring minds want to know.

Magnuson-Moss law maybe.

I am, and it is. $50. In this case, I was trying to help the MOA a bit by them getting credit for getting me to Contego's website.

The MOA finally put the code up on their website.. search for "Contego" - and look for member discounts. That is only visible to registered MOA members I think.

FWIW - I ran the costs yesterday - the Contego warranty is 1/3rd the cost of one from the dealer. And MUCH less restrictive for DIY. You can guess who I'm going with..

Why not wait for at least 24mo. 24K miles. If the bike is trouble free, you may decide to skip the warranty. Generally you've got until the end of the OEM warranty, to purchase an aftermarket warranty. Some companies use this as a grey area. If your at say 35K they may decline you, but accept someone at 28K.

Contego just requires you still be under warranty. I'm at 34k+ and about 3 weeks until 3 years is up, so...

Contego will even cover a bike that is no longer under warranty but it is much costlier although it still may be cheaper than other providers.
