I had a pet crow in elementary school and boy what a great pet.

never knew when he/she would show up.

Walking home or to school and there he/she would be winging along from limb to limb giving me a hard time till I shared some morsel with her/he.

Neighbor's would sometimes shoo he/her away with a broom or such, bad idea. Laundry day would find all their clothes on the ground, great beak for pulling clothes pins!

Fascinating animal and to think that crow calling at me may have been told to watch out for me by my old friend.

How did you/it happen upon each other?

How long did this relationship last?

My folks had nut trees that would attract crows in droves & they consumed great amounts of the crop.

As a teenager I would try to pick them off with a 22.

It was hard to get the first one (as they are very smart/observant) but if successful easy to pick off the next one or even several more as they become very excited.

I inherited 'Blacky' from a neighbor who raised him/her after finding the fledgling on the ground.

I was introduced and fed and pet him for about a month before my neighbor moved away.

Blacky and I visited for about two years, he/she left in the winter and returned the following spring. The next spring he / she never showed up. Probably shot by someone with a 22!

Anyway it was a great relationship and along with a skunk, raccoon, gators, squirrel, dogs, cats, canaries, budgies, rats, rabbits, chipmunks, monkey and others I became friends with they all left me a little better for having enjoyed their company.

Pests are pests, at least from our perspective. And yes I have dispatched the odd one as necessary. It is never easy and I always tried something else first but . . . It is after all the rules that all creatures live by.

HEY NOW, easy....

I found a King snake two Spring/Summers in a row that I was convinced was the same one.

Blacky found you the 2nd season, that's pretty cool.

I only had farm type animals including chickens, rabbits, goats & sheep (I was in 4-H).

I only recall nameing one.

She was Henrietta the Rhode Island Red hen.

If I had had a pet crow or raven, I would never be able to dispatch one. I have a lot of respect for them.

I never enjoyed taking another life but I did enjoy the almonds & pecans that came from those trees so the crows & squirrels had to go.
