Adamski95
Hi!! I have question with regards to replacing a broken timing chain guard rail. How difficult it is to replace bottom chain guard rail? the guard rail is broken and my motorcycle head exhaust pipes get red hot when idle at warm up. I checked the intake valves on left side of the cylinder and one is white and the other is black. So its seems like the one valve is not closing all the way because of the broken chain guard rail. Can anybody help with this? Do I need to take half of the motor out to replace it? Thank you in advance!! Adam Link to comment
Boffin
The bad news is that the motor has to be split to replace the chain guide. On the other hand, if I recall correctly, someone on here once modified a guide rail to clip into place at the bottom and thereby avoided that major task. Note: this is not a recommended fix - losing the guide rail could well lead to loss of engine. Andy Link to comment
T__
Adam, technically the engine has to be split to replace the timing chain guide rails.. How bad is yours broken? Is it just the outer tip,, or is it a major break farther in? On your “red hot exhaust pipes during warm up”? If you are on fast idle during warm up that is perfectly normal.. Those pipes are single wall & tend to show red glow easily if the engine RPM is elevated & the bike isn’t moving through the air.. Now on your valve issue? BOTH intake valves are operated from the EXACT same rocker arm so if one is OK & the other isn’t it isn’t a cam or chain problem.. Maybe normal or maybe a burnt or mis-adjusted valve.. Or maybe something else like throttle cable out of it’s seat or major vacuum leak.. Have you run a compression check? How about verifying both throttle cables are fully seated in the TBI adjustment furrels? As Andy said,, if that timing chain guide is broken enough to allow the chain to bunch up it can cause a catastrophic engine failure.. I do know of one 1100 with just the outer tip of the chain guide missing & it has been like that for years without any problems.. Can you give us a little background info & more bike history? Maybe there is more to your problem than we can determine from your BRIEF description above.. BTW,, welcome to the board here--- I think you will find it a friendly place with great people.. Boffin
Oh BTW, I forgot to add - BMW say you should not warm-up oilheads. Just start up and ride off. Especially NEVER leave the bike unattended on high-idle, they will rapidly get hot enough to melt the tupperware and the oil sight glass, leading to hot oil splashing onto a red-hot exhaust pipe. Several bikes have caught fire from being left 'warming up' with the fast-idle lever (marked 'Choke' on the 1100) set. Andy Link to comment
